| yarrick's Full Review: Nintendo NES |
Back in 1985 a company named Nintendo released the Nintendo Entertainment System or SNS. Nintendo was able to beat out Atari and went on to making some great titles and creating a gaming dynasty (at least till the Sega Genesis came out).
I never owned a NES when it was the most popular system on the market. I had always wanted a NES but never actually got one. I was born in 1984 so for part of the time I was too young and then the SNES came out which was my first official system (I had a cousins old Atari system). So now I have owned every Nintendo system to come out besides Gameboy Color and have become a video game fanatic. What can I say I love playing video games there fun, time consuming, fun, what I already said fun you say but it is it truly is.
I actually bought one several months ago from a flea market. I got the system, 2 controllers, a duck hunt gun, and Super Mario/Duck Hunt/Track Meet all for $25. I felt that this was a great bargain considering Funcoland didn't have any systems and there price for the system was around $15 more. I also found some pretty good games at the Flea Market Blades of Steel a excellent hockey game that does have fights in it and Zelda if you don't know what this game is then you must be living in a cave and you should smack yourself. You can also find many old Nintendo games at Funcoland the problem is many times they don’t have the more popular games or the price for it is ridiculous. An a example I saw that Funcoland had a Contra on the wall, I picked it up looked at the price and put it right back. The price tag was $19 for a game on a system that is more then 15 years old.
Now for some info on the system. The NES is an 8-bit system. While it doesn’t have amazing graphic capabilities but what it lacks in graphics it makes up in having tons of excellent games available. The only problem may be finding these games. Nintendo had so many excellent games on the NES and you can find many of them have moved on to Nintendo's newer system's Zelda, Final Fantasy (no Square left after the SNES NOOOOO), Castlevania, and of course there franchise character Mario.
The controller has a very simple design and has no where near as many buttons or is the size of newer controllers. The NES controller is a basic rectangle with your basic directional pad, an a and b button, and the start and select buttons. There is also a light gun for this system. The only game that I know that uses it is Duck Hunt.
Some games that I would recommend for you if you are going to get this system or if you already have it are:
Final Fantasy
Any of the Zelda games
Any of the Dragon Warrior games
Blades of Steel
Contra
Mike Tyson’s Punch Out (some games may be titled different I heard Nintendo renamed the game after Tyson had some problems with the law)
And any game from the Mario series
Ninja Turtles 2 the Arcade Game
Ninja Gaiden
Note: I can't recommend too many games because I just got the system several months ago.
Final Thoughts
Nintendo Entertainment System is a great system not only because of all the classic games it has but because it basically took video games to a new level. Never owned this system and were alive when it was out then shame on you and try and find it now.
Avalibility of Games: C
Many stores don’t sell Nintendo games and if they do the more popular ones are pretty expensive compared to other games on the system. The best place for you to find the system or popular games for low prices is Ebay.
Quality of Games: A+
I went through this throughout the review you should know why this gets an A+.
Graphics: C
It all depends on the way you look at it if you compare the graphics to systems now it is not even close but if you look at it for when it was created and other systems of it’s time then it is good.
Fun Factor: A
Tons of quality titles give this system a great fun factor.
Pricing: B+
Great system that you can get really cheap especially off of Ebay but some of the rarer games you can not find or are pretty expensive for the system they are on.
Overall: A
Great system with tons of titles and games for every type of video game fan. If you can look past the not so great graphics then this system is for you.
