| queenofallevil's Full Review: Epilady Epilady Classic Hair Remover |
Ever come across one of those tabloid papers while waiting in a supermarket checkout line?
You know the ones....
"Bat Boy Gets Heart Transplant!"
"Mom Gives Birth To Toaster Oven!"
"World Ends On Thursday!"
Yeah. That's what I'm talking about.
Perhaps in one of your weaker moments, you decided to peruse across the front page to see the new photos actually proving that sasquatch exists. You stare in awe as the pictures show proof of the hairy creature stepping out of the shadows, a glimpse only to be caught in a moment of time through the watchful eye of a very patient photographer.
I'm sorry for all the trouble I caused. You see...that's no Yeti in the photo...that's me.
Yep...all it takes is a weekend's worth of laziness, and I become that creature. Two days of not shaving, and there I am....front and center of the National Enquirer for everyone to see. My humble apologies to all the believers out there....I didn't mean to cause such a fuss, I just thought I could get my mail without anyone noticing my temporary lack of bodily hygiene.
Okay...so I'm joking.
Sort of.
The horrible truth is that I do seem to have a real problem with hair growth. If I don't shave every single day I get a major 5 o'clock shadow on my legs. And I'm not talking that fine, blonde stuff. Nope, 100% pure steel wool, baby....that's me! Thick, nasty, and dark stuff. I could strip the rust off a hubcap if I rubbed my armpit on it. Really.
Thankfully...this is just a legs/armpit thing. I don't have this problem anywhere else. (No cool Tom Seleck mustache or anything yet!)
So, just like any woman who likes to go outside every once in a while without frightening the neighborhood children, I decided to purchase the Epilady Classic.
Epilady??? Do they still MAKE those????
You bet they do. When it comes to female hygiene, pain never goes out of style, I guess. *shrug*
HOW IT WORKS:
As with any device of this nature, the Epilady Classic removes hair semi-permanantly by ripping the hair right out from under the skin's surface. The unit works by a wrapped metal coil (much like a small spring) which rotates, catching hairs along the way, and the rotating action yanks the hairs outward, pulling them out in the process.
SOUND PAINFUL?
Well, quite frankly, it is.
At first.
The major drawback to the Epilady Classic is that most women simply "give up" on the product once they realize how incredibly painful the process can be. Much like tweezing your eyebrows however, the pain deminishes with frequency of use. Do it enough, and eventually it's painless. If you have a problem with sensitive skin, or a low pain threshold in general...don't even think about purchasing any of Epilady's product line.
WHAT ABOUT YOU, VAL?
Me? Well, I'm one of those weird people. I gave birth to my son without a thought to pain medications. I can break fingers and say "Gee, that sucks..." without even batting an eyelash. Pain has never bothered me...I guess I'm lucky in that respect. The sole reason I write this review is based on the fact there might be another weirdo like me out there who doesn't mind pain and might actually enjoy this product too. Frankly, I love the Epilady Classic.
HOW TO USE THE EPILADY CLASSIC:
Here is the tricky part. Once you master resisting the desire to flail about each time you press it to your skin, the correct way to use it is to move the coil head in small circles on your legs, concentrating on a small area and only moving to another area when that patch becomes hair-free. This is where the manufacturer's advertisements mislead consumers. They claim the Epilady Classic saves time over shaving, which it does only in the long run. It takes about 10 times as long to correctly remove the hair from your legs per each usage in comparison to shaving, but since the hair is removed at the root, regrowth takes much longer, and your legs won't require attention again for up to 6 weeks. (Translation: That means one week for gorilla women like me.)
In order to get the maximum results, you must run the unit across your legs with the correct amount of pressure against the skin. Press too firmly, the friction from the coil will burn your skin. Press too lightly, you'll only manage to break the hairs without pulling out the root. This results in nasty ingrown hairs that leave big red bumps on the skin a few days after using this product. It does take a while, but usually after the third or fourth try you will start to master the exact amount of pressure needed.
A huge drawback is you must wait until the hairs are long enough to be removed by the Epilady Classic. This usually takes about 2 weeks once hair regrowth becomes evident. (Gorilla woman time: 2 days) The unit is fairly quiet however, and only emits a slight "buzzing" sound.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING THE EPILADY CLASSIC OVER SHAVING?
As I mentioned before, you don't have to worry about the hair removal process for up to 6 weeks with the Epilady, which saves serious time from your daily bathing ritual.
Plus, you'll be saving money over the cost of razors, shaving creams, etc.
WHAT ABOUT OTHER....UMMMM....."AREAS"?
Forget it!!!
There is no way I could recommend this product for anywhere except leg hair removal. (And yes...I did try!)
UNDERARMS: Not a chance. All the Epilady Classic will do is grab the hair to PULL YOUR SKIN INTO THE COIL. It is not a nice feeling.
TOES: I've never had any success here. Since the area is so small, you can't get the right pressure to effectively remove hair. Use tweezers or shave instead, and save yourself some time/pain.
FACIAL HAIR: Personally, I don't have facial hair so I comment too much here. My big brother one day decided as a joke to put it against his "morning stubble face", only to throw it across the room while screeching a few superlative phrases. He did have a nice "bald area" on his one cheek for about 4 weeks, so I assume this product could be used for this type of hair removal. I'd strongly warn you not to attempt it however....
BIKINI AREA: If you even thought about bringing this product within two feet of your nether-regions...you're even a bigger freak than I am. YIPE!!!!
PRODUCT PACKAGING:
The Epilady Classic comes with the unit itself, a faux-leather traveling pouch, and a outlet cord. As far as I know, the two Epilady Classics I own are NOT cordless. They must be used where a standard wall outlet is within reach.....a serious downfall in my opinion. I'm not sure about Epilady's Classic Trio...it may indeed be chargeable. The Epilady "Trio" is a variation of the Epilady Classic, but has the bonus of multiple speed settings.
OVERALL:
A good product as long as you can tough it out past the painful few first times. NOT for everyone. I think people who use wax-hair-removal treatments often would benefit from the Epilady Classic. Shavers will more than likely find the experience too painful to handle.
But hey...if you are a Gorilla Woman like me...do give it a try!
PURCHASE INFORMATION:
The Epilady Classic can be purchased at various online beauty supply sites, or directly from the company at:
www.epilady.com
My first epilady I got for Christmas when I was 16. (Hey...I wanted one). After the coil began to wear out some, I found my second Epilady Classic at a local garage sale unopened for five dollars. If you want to try this unit, I'd suggest looking around....many women refused to use it, and it's quite easy to find a good deal on the older model Epilady Hair Removal Systems.
As always, thanks for taking the time to read my reviews!
