A VERY DETAILED BIOGRAPHY OF "THE QUEEN OF SOUL" OR "LADY SOUL" - ARETHA FRANKLINDec 16 '04 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Aretha Franklin was born on 25 March 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee the 4th of 6 children. Aretha began singing gospel in her father's church in the early 1950's. At the age of 2 in 1944 her family moved from Memphis to Detroit, Michigan. Arethas father was the Reverend Cecil La Vaughan Franklin who was pastor of the 4,500 member New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan. Mr. Franklin was the most famous and in demand gospel preacher in the 1950s commanding upwards of $4,000.00 a sermon and was dubbed the Million-Dollar Voice. . Her mother and father both sang gospel in his church and they convinced her to sing with them. Aretha also had 2 very talented sisters Erma and Carolyn that were convinced by their parents to sing at church and they would also have a professional singing career. Erma was born on 13 March 1938 in Shelby, Mississippi and she would have 2 charting singles and 1 charting album. Piece Of My Heart which became a #12 pop hit for Janis Joplin with Big Brother & The Holding Company in 1968 was her 1st hit single in 1967 peaking at #10 on the R&B chart and at #62 on the pop chart. Her other charting single was Gotta Find Me A Lover (24 Hours A Day) that peaked at #40 on the R&B chart for her in 1969. Her one charting album was Soul Sister that peaked at #199 on the pop chart. Carolyn was born on 13 May 1944 in Memphis, Tennessee and she would have 2 charting singles during her career. In 1969 she released Its True I Gonna Miss You that peaked at #23 on the R&B chart and at #119 on the pop chart. All I Want To Be Is A Woman was her other charting single in 1970 and it peaked at #108 on the pop chart. Carolyn was also a very good songwriter and some of the songs she wrote were Without Love, Baby, Baby, Baby, I Was Made For You and Sing It Again-Say It Again. Carolyn died on 25 April 1988 in Bloomfield Hills, MI and Erma died on 7 September 2002 in Detroit, MI both of cancer. Arethas mother Barbara Betty Franklin left the family in 1948 and died in 1952. Aretha was given singing lessons in the early 50s by family friends Mahalia Jackson, The Ward Sisters, Frances Steadman and Marion Williams. Her father offered to pay for professional piano lessons for her but she turned him down and self-taught herself by listening to jazz pianist, Eddie Heywood records. Eddie had 2 songs on the pop singles chart in 1956 with the biggest of these being a #2 hit Unchained Melody that he accompanied Hugo Winterhalter & His Orchestra on. Gospel singer Reverend James Cleveland whos biggest selling record would be his only #1 hit gospel album in 1990 titled Having Church moved in with the family next. On a side note in 1962 a very young Billy Preston would play the organ in The Cleveland Singers who were Clevelands backup group. The biggest influence over Arethas career is said to be hymn writer and gospel singer Clara Ward of The Ward Sisters. Aretha had heard her sing Peace In The Valley at a relatives funeral and decided then that she wanted to sing professionally herself. At the age of 12 in 1954 she was promoted from the choir to become a featured soloist and her very first solo song was Precious Lord. In 1955 she signed a contract with Chicagos Checker records and JVB records. At the age of 14 in 1956 she went on the road with her father and his Gospel Revival and she recorded Ward hymns. Her very first release was The Gospel Sound Of Aretha Franklin on Checker/Battle records where she not only sang but played the piano as well but it failed to make any of the charts. The album also included the song The Day Is Past And Gone which she would sing 17 years later at Claras funeral. In 1957 at the age of 15 she was the unwed mother of a baby boy from Ken Cunningham. She next started taking voice lessons from Leora Carter and made her very first personal appearance on a bill with comedian Buddy Hackett at the Trade Winds in Chicago, IL. After dropping out of High School at the age of 18 in 1958 and having the second of her to be 4 children, she began touring as a gospel vocalist. Aretha was encouraged by Sam Cooke whos biggest hit was the single You Send Me that went to #1 in 1957 and she decides to change her style of singing. When Aretha is not taking care of business, she says, I'm very domestic I like to cook and do my own cleaning. And she likes getting out her rod and reel. I took almost 8 full days putting this one together and tried to be as detailed as possible. I didnt feel I would do her much justice if I left out a lot. I also thought several times over the past week if maybe I should post a 2 part review for the first time. I know a lot here do part reviews but I didnt feel it was right to make my readers have to go through 2 reviews to get the complete story? I could be all wrong on this but I hope this is the best way in the end? What is usually 9 to 11 pages of word typing ends up being 22 this time around. Maybe the best way to read this is a little today and a little tomorrow etc. if you havent already read it all? I do know if I ever decide to do a review on any or all of my all-time 3 favorite artists The Beatles, The Beach Boys or Elvis Presley that I am positive I will have to post 2 or 3 parts since they have such long detailed careers. Now back to our regularly scheduled program already in progress: I found this quote that I thought was very true and very appropriate. There are certain musical notes that can be played on a saxophone that are chilling; similarly, there are sounds above the twelfth fret on a guitar that are orgasmic - Aretha Franklin is better than any instrument, as she can hit notes that do not exist in instrumental terms. Arethas fear of flying is said to have stemmed from a bad flight that she had experienced in 1982. Since that incident she has traveled by custom tour bus, which she claims has great advantages. She is quoted as saying I get to see America" and she loves to just get off the bus at anytime and walk into a Wal-Mart store and have herself a ball as long as she is not recognized. She is however taking desensitization classes that she hopes will help her fly again someday soon so she can fly to Italy. Pavarotti said to her once You are scared of the plane, he told her. I'll come to pick you up in my private jet. From September 1987 to July 1993 Aretha could be heard singing the theme song for the NBC TV comedy show A Different World. Aretha had 20 #1 hits on the R&B singles chart, more than any other R&B artist ever. From 1967 to 2003 she has collected 16 Grammy awards. Besides her autobiography I spoke about earlier she also is included in Higher Ground: Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Curtis Mayfield and the Rise and Fall of American Soul that was released in hardback in March 2004. It also came out on 22 March this year in paperback. Here is a list of some other very interesting books about Aretha: Aretha Franklin: Motown Superstar I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You: Aretha Franklin, Respect and the Creation of a Soul Music Masterpiece Aretha: A Biography of Aretha Franklin Divas: Aretha Franklin Arethas musical sound was amiable, beautiful, boisterous, cathartic, celebratory, confident, dramatic, earnest, earthy, exuberant, fiery, feisty, gritty, happy, harmless, interesting, joyous, moody, natural, open, organic, passionate, plaintive, poignant, rambunctious, refreshing, romantic, rousing, sensual, sexy, spiritual, stylish and warm. She has sang many different styles over the years contemporary, gospel, pop, rap, R&B and soul. My collection at one time included very many of Arethas records. I had all but 3 songs on the album above I reviewed on singles. I also owed 10 of her albums just behind The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Monkees, and Elvis Presley for the most albums by an artist. So I owned more albums by her than any other female I followed and any other R&B/Soul artist I followed. Im sorry to say I do not own any singles or albums by her anymore but I do have 5 CDs. I guess you could say Aretha is an institution of sorts, who is assured the ability to draw live audiences and immense RESPECT (pun intended) for the rest of her life. Thanks for dropping by and reading today and if you only partly read it because it was sooooooooo long I can really understand. Thanks for reading, rating and commenting if you have time. Up next is a great group of guys from the UK who formed in Manchester, England in 1961. They had only 5 singles make the US charts all went top 50 and only 3 albums.
