Top Ten...hmmm...Dec 16 '04 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Excellent movies, most of them will scare you (except possibly Re-Animator). I recommend them to everybody, horror or non-horror fans alike. Firstly, let me say that horror is a very loosely based term nowadays. Let me explain before you all get hot and bothered. Horror flicks are movies that frighten us, make us jump, but most importantly of all: they are very STRAIGHT FORWARD! There is NO thinking involved after a horror movie except on how it scared you half to death. When people dwell on the questions of movies, such as Silence of the Lambs and Indentity, they are psychological thrillers, not horror movies. Sure, these two are commonly intermingled, but I would like everyone to know the differences between Rosemary's Baby and Bram Stoker's Dracula. Then there's gorror. These are my kind of movies. Movies like Dead Alive, Evil Dead, From Dusk Till Dawn, and Day of the Dead. Unfortunately, this is not a gorror list, but some movies incorporate the horror and the gorror, so some of them will make the cut. When I say that I'll add horror/gorror movies, I promise to all of you thinkers that I will also add psychological thrillers/horror films. 1. The Shining Specific Genre: Ghost Horror Directed by Stanley Kubrick Starring Jack Nicholson Contains: Spectral imagery, some gore, imminent death and build-up scenes I feel kind of weird putting this at number one, since I only first saw it a month ago. It wasn't one of those movies that make you jump, but more so cover your eyes and quiver with fear. It sort of falls under that psycho thriller/horror category, but more so just horror. 2. The Exorcist Specific Genre: Satanic imagery horror Directed by William Friedkin Starring Linda Blair Contains: Extremely shocking imagery, some gore, frightening sound and language Boy, when I first saw this movie (I think I was 12), it scared me so badly, that I couldn't fall asleep for nights after. The images (Linda Blair turning her head around; stabbing herself in the crotch with a crucifix) alone are frightening enough, but the voice of Satan through a little girl scares children and parents alike. 3. Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn Specific Genre: Undead horror/gorror Directed by Sam Raimi Starring Bruce Campbell Contains: Jump-out-of-your-seat sequences, moderate gore, some violence, frightening undead imagery Now one of my all time favorite horror/gorror films, Evil Dead 2 breaks through the classic red-trickles of blood and explodes with, well, explosions of black, green and yellow blood. The combination of "jumping" with the slapstick comedy gets it to number three. I recommend renting this movie before you buy. It's an acquired taste. 4. It Genre: Spectral horror Directed by Tommy Lee Wallace Starring Tim Curry Contains: Shocking imagery, Tim Curry with sharp teeth, kid vs. clown sequences I don't think there has ever been a movie as scary as It that has gone so unnoticed. The movie is great; I've seen it a dozen times and it still scares me. The sewer scene alone is worth buying it. If you hate clowns, this movie will make you hate them more. 5. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1976) Specific Genre: Realistic life-threatening situations Directed by Tobe Hooper Starring Marilyn Burns Contains: Some violence/gore, jump-out-of-your-seat sequences This movie, though thought less of when the remake came out (which was terrible), is wonderfully shot for such a small budget. Tobe Hooper combined his ability for casual dialogue with his equally comparable ability to wreck your senses. The thought of grave robbing for dining purposes still frightens me. Put yourself in the shoes of Marilyn Burns at the end of the movie and you'll see what I mean. 6. Creepshow Specific Genre: Grouped short-films about murder, bugs, and genocide Directed by George A. Romero Starring Ed Harris; Hal Holbrook Contains: Some violence/gore, frightening undead images, real-life macabre This movie sort of scared me the first time I saw it, but as I watched it again and again, as I do with most of my movies, it started to sink in how actually scary it is. The five short films are excellently written and directed, but, most uniquely, they ascertain a certain level of enjoyment out of murder. Scary, huh? 7. Nightmare on Elm Street Specific Genre: Fantastical horror Directed by Wes Craven Starring Johnny Depp Contains: Frightening imagery, some violence/gore There's nothing really to say about this movie, as Freddy Krueger has been completely ruined for me over the last number of years. All I can say is that if you are a fan of plain chaos and scary images, you should go immediately to buy this one. The scene where Nancy is being cut and thrown around the room by a seemingly invisible Krueger is scary enough, let alone the body bag scene later on. 8. The Last House on the Left Specific Genre: Crazy realistic abduction Directed by Wes Craven Starring Sandra Cassel Contains: Rape, moderate violence, some gore My girlfriend wanted to watch this movie with me. We didn't get a chance to, so I watched it alone. She was adament about wanting to see it, but I had to refuse. The movie is much too graphically realistic, in the sense of abduction, drug addiction, real panic, and horrible outcomes. The bad guys are so bad in this movie, that you just want to jump into the screen and strangle them yourself. 9. Madman Specific Genre: Gory homicide Directed by Joe Giannone Starring Gaylen Ross Contains: Very frightening imagery, scary chase sequences, old slapstick comedy horror This movie is pure insanity. It involves an axe-murderer, as is expected, but what is unexpected, is that he uses the axe so few time in the movie. He simply jumps on carhoods to decapitate people (by the way, that carhood scene is excellent). The gore effects are sub-standard, which is okay (and it's kind of sad that I can tell) and the methods of murder are pretty unique. It's sort of an Evil Dead rip-off and has no actual ending. 10. Re-Animator Specific Genre: Gory undead re-animation Directed by Brian Yuzna Starring Jeffrey Combs Contains: Strong gore, slightly frightening images If I were doing a favorite horror movie list, this would be right near number one. This movie is excellent. The acting is superb, especially by Jeffrey Combs, and the gore effects are spectacular. I'll give you some insight: for the second half of the movie, a severed head is the bad guy. |
