For That Hard to Buy For Person---Things You Never Knew Existed.com
Feb 20, 2008
Each year, my family has a Christmas gift exchange with a twist. We draw names for each other, but in lieu of buying a single gift, we fill each others stockings; because grown-up's like stocking too. Last Christmas I had the impossibly hard step-father to purchase for. Thankfully for me, I received a catalog in the mail filled with a treasure trove of oddities and kitsch-y items, from Things You Never Knew Existed which prompted my first visit to their website. I have to say, I have been back many times to browse and buy their unique items.
Thing You Never Knew Existed.com
The website has what I can best describe as a comic book look to it. The graphics are in comic bubbles and the writing is reminiscent of a comic as well. The site is super easy to navigate from the many categories, or via the search box. This is helpful if you have a catalog and already know what you want.
Items For Sale are interesting and some are familiar. Many will likely fall into the category of Things You Never Knew Existed. For example, on my first visit I picked up such diverse items as a Countdown to Bush leaving office wall calendar and a replica of the infamous Christmas Story Leg Lamp as an ornament. They have a good many political items, (lampooning both parties). Right now, prominently featured is a Hilary Clinton nutcracker.
They also sell a ton of t-shirts, some of which are funny, and some that a good many people would find offensive. Sample slogans include:
They Lied...Hard Work Has Killed Lots of People
If It Weren't For The Gutter, My Mind Would be Homeless
FBI Female Body Inspector
You get the idea. There are literally 30 plus pages of just t-shirts.
In addition, you can find year-round Halloween items. They also feature a ton of movie collectibles. I was intrigued by the Lord of the Rings chess set, although I haven't made that pricey plunge just yet.
I must say that upon browsing through, you would be challenged not to find something unique for the hardest person on your gift list!
My Shopping Experiences
As I mentioned earlier, I have no problems finding items galore here, and purchasing is really as easy as shopping.
Item Information is adequate. Sizes are given, though no size chart is available that I've found. For items like the t-shirts you need to know your size. Things like fabric content and wash instructions are not available. Other non-clothing items do have dimensions, weight and such. Every item has a picture, but no alternate views are available.
Pricing is what I find good to acceptable. There are certainly items with a high price point, right on down to downright cheap.
Checkout is quite easy. As you add items, to your cart, you choose whether they are to ship to you, or an alternate recipient. Your cart also shows right on the top of the page (which I love). You will need to create an account, but it makes repeat visits very easy.
Shipping options are selected when checking out, from a drop-down menu, and there are four options given. Standard, Rush, Express and Overnight. I have only ever chosen the Standard Ground, and found it to be perfectly adequate. Each alternate "ship to" address has its own charge. The cost is reasonable, and based upon the cost of your purchase. Ground rates begin at $3.98 and go up from there.
E-mail Notification comes to my e-mail address as soon as I order, and as well as when my packages ship. The shipping e-mail also has a click-able link back to the site for package tracking.
Payment can be made via the usual Visa, Mastercard, Discover and AMEX. If you need to pay with a check, the site has pdf files that you download and fill in to order via mail.
Customer Service is not something I have ever had occasion to use with Things You Never Knew Existed however I am very confident in ordering with them for several reasons. They prominently feature contact information on their home page, always a plus in my book. They also offer a satisfaction guarantee and have been in business since 1914. Their FAQ page is huge, and really put my mind at ease last year when using them for the first time.
All in All
I really enjoy and highly recommend this site for oddities and just plain fun items. The only reason I have rated them four stars instead of five is due to the website layout, which would be improved with better product detailing as well as better sub-categories so that it is not necessary to page through so many items before finding what you want. It's just a little thing that should not deter you from paying this site a visit next time you are in need of a gift.
