Re: Re: I have had two pedicures (Reply to this comment)

Hi: I've been getting pedicures for many years and just recently saw an article in O magazine warning people to avoid whirlpool footbaths. I've known my person for a long time and need to know how to approach her on this subject. She seems like the cleanest person ever but I agree that do you really know if all the precautions are being taken and filters cleaning regularly. Now I'm absolutely petrified to go back and will miss those pedicures. What to do????

How nice! I have one too. I think I need it tonight as I been so busy since I returned from vacation. (so much for all the de-stressing I did on vacation!)
Enjoy!

I may return to another salon that offers both. I did my own for my vacation and did a pretty decent job. I even bought a callus shaver! But I miss the massage!
Take care,

I get regular pedicures, but they are not in fancy spa machines. I have been using the same salon for about 10 years. Great idea for a review, Peggy!

Not paranoid at all! I'm sure he had good intentions but right now I just can't trust. Maybe he can get you a home foot spa and personally give you a nice foot massage! LOL!
Take care,
Peggy

Informative! (Reply to this comment)

Thanks for such an informative piece. My boyfriend had offered to send me to a salon for a pedicure but I declined because I said I didn't want to risk infection. He told me I was just being paranoid. Now I'm going to send him the link to your informative write-up!!!
Thanks for the info!

I've had one or two of those from spa pedicures (Linda talks about her similar experience in the link to her essay.)They are gross, aren't they? You'd think I'd learn.
Now with these nasty bacterial infections happening, however, you won't catch my feet inside a pedicure spa whirlpool.
Thanks for r/r/c!

...I had a toenail fungus ONCE, but it took MONTHS to clear up. I think (not 100% sure) I got it from a public gym/shower club. I can certainly see how spa pedicures could pass along these germs as well.

Yes, and I may just call upon my husband for a nice massage too. Now, if I could teach him to paint my toenails I'd be all set.
Take care and happy holidays,

Re: Spread the word! (Reply to this comment)

Yes, do spread the word. I tried to warn a couple of my friends who don't read the papers and watch the news as much as I do, but they pooh-poohed it. The scary thing is that the salons that are the target of the investigation are less than 5 miles from me.
Even my hair salon operator acknowledged that clients who may have frequented these bad salons may be coming to her now and she would have no idea. Scary!!
Well, I'll be bending over, too, and giving myself pedicures. Too bad you and I don't live in the same town! LOL!
Happy Holidays!

Peggy, this is a very informative essay about a serious problem I knew little about. I'm truly very lucky I escaped with only a toenail fungus. Your description and the picture of the lesion is enough to scare anyone into doing pedicures at home. There are so many wonderful products on the market, it is easy to do a professional looking job on your own.
Excellent essay,
Linda

And smart you are. I have a Homedics home spa so I definitely should be using it more.
Happy holidays to you, too!

You know, you're right about even the fancier places, Jo. I get my hair done at a nice salon with two of these chairs. I know they are deligent about sanitizing tools and cleaning between clients, but I cannot be sure about cleaning with the filter and soaking the tub in bleach solution. I have been the first one in the salon in the a.m. often and have never smelled a bleach smell so I somewhat doubt they follow the regs to a T.
I really wanted to get a pedicure this week as I'm taking off for Kauai for Friday but I'll manage on my own.
Take care and thanks for r/r/c.
