The Bottom Line There is no reason not to efile. I wouldn't recommend paying an arm and a leg to do it, but there are a bunch of low cost options out there.
I noticed all of the reviews here are rather old (From 2000 -- it is now almost 2005). I have been a programmer for an online tax company for the last 6 years, and I can tell you that efile has changed a bunch since then. The IRS has their systems much more efficient, more reliable, and as secure as ever. And the online software companies that are IRS authorized efile partners meet a strict set of privacy and security guidelines. All transmissions are encrypted, and you really do get your refund lots faster (9-14 days instead of 4-8 weeks). Plus, you get electronic authorization that the IRS has received and accepted your tax return (this comes in the form of a "DCN" -- it's like a serial number for your tax return). Plus, when you efile, your data are entered by you... not by an IRS employee who is likely to make a data entry error! |
