Black & Decker - A Tough Little Iron

Written: Sep 28 '01
Pros:light weight?, good features, non-stick, good price
Cons:light weight?
The Bottom Line: This iron is very durable, has good features, is easy to use, and is a good value.

Let me begin by explaining the title. First, we know the Black & Decker name is synonymous with power tools, so we think "it's tough". I found that to be true. I can't tell you how many times I have dropped this iron and it keeps on working! LOL. Now, I'm a little clumsy. Since I had spine surgery I have reduced sensation in my hands so I often drop things. This Black & Decker 380 Quick N Easy Iron withstood the drops.

Allow me to explain my question marks in the pros/cons section concerning the light weight of the iron. The advantage of that is obvious. Your hand does not get as tired using the iron - picking it up and moving it. That's great. One the other hand (no pun intended), its lightness causes it to be a little unstable and easily knocked over.

FEATURES

1. Non-stick surface. It is Silverstone coated and also resists spray-starch build up. One word of caution - I scraped it on the end of a coat hanger and it did scratch the surface. So far it has not hindered the operation of the iron, though.

2. Temperature settings. There are seven (4 dry and three steam). There's a handy little chart with fabric types to let you know which to use - it's right on the iron.

3. Raised cord. There's a three and a half inch rubber guard that raises the cord at the rear of the iron. This is great to help keep the cord out of your way while ironing. The cord itself is about 7 feet in length.

4. Spray/Steam. There are thumb-controled spray and steam buttons on top of the handle. This model has what is called "Sure Steam System". It delivers an even burst of steam. I don't use steam much but I can say when I do it is consistent each time. There is no build up in the steam openings. It also has auto-clean system.

At $24.95, this iron replaced our previous T-Fal which was much more expensive. I think the T-Fal felt like higher quality because it was heavier and had a few more features (such as a water level gauge). But - this B&D irons our clothes and does what we need for it to do. It's a good product at an excellent price.
