The Bottom Line While all of the movies on this list are my favorites, I don't expect everyone to feel the same. However, I do recommend each for other horror fans like myself.
I've been a huge fan of the horror genre ever since I was young. I've seen many horror movies and have also read many reviews. Many times I would find that I'd watch a movie and think about how great it was, but then read a review on the same film from a top notch film critic and find out that their opinion was much different than mine. It can be understood that there are professionals who get paid to review movies based on their knowledge and analysis of what a great film really is. However, many of us may not be on the same critical level as these critics. In result, I offer to you my own personal list of the top 10 best horror movies of all time. I may not be a top notch film critic, but I am a top notch horror fan and I think many other fans of the horror genre can relate. 10. SCREAM With this movie, Wes Craven created a whole new age of modern horror. The evil in SCREAM is not a monster from the unknown, but it is actually the boy next door. The killer can be anyone and it isn't made clear who it really is until the end. The suspense is brought to the screen with the assumptions of the viewer. While one second it seems clear who the killer is, the next second makes that same suspicion impossible. If that isn't enough, the first 5 minutes alone raise enough suspense and fear that the chills remain throughout the entirety of the film. 9. DEAD ALIVE Peter Jackson co-wrote and directed this film which I consider to be the greatest zombie movie ever made. Hailed as the goriest fright film of all time, DEAD ALIVE is filled with mutilations, decapitations, and buckets of blood. It is the ideal movie for any gorehound. Along with this, the humor added into the film truly defines what we've learned to call the horror-comedy. A simple, yet original, idea transpires into a non-stop thrill ride fully loaded with scares, laughs, and an unforgettable conclusion. 8. SUSPIRIA This is a movie that every horror fan should see. Possibly Dario Argento's greatest accomplishment, SUSPIRIA contains one of the most unforgettable death scenes ever filmed. The score is chilling, and the color schemes are bright leading to a contrast of fear and beauty. The central character in many ways is isolated from all that surrounds her and is forced to overcome the evil alone. I can't say much without giving important details away. I highly recommend this film for anyone who has never seen it. 7. SESSION 9 This is one movie that I'm sure not many people have heard of. I consider this to be one of the greatest psychological thrillers of all time. The character development leads the viewer to understand the differences in each of the central figures. Each of the five main men are quickly accepted for who they are and the viewer finds it hard not to like each at least in some way. The darkness of the abandoned mental hospital in which the movie takes place is what introduces fear into the film. Pay especially close attention to the old recordings that feature the various voices of a patient with split personalities. These tapes along with the ending of this film are truly chilling. If you like movies that keep you thinking the whole way through, this is the movie of your dreams. 6. PHANTASM Another psychological thriller I've always enjoyed is Don Coscarelli's PHANTASM. Much like the main character in the film, the fear takes place in the mind of the viewer. What's real and what isn't is a constant question that viewers must ask themselves. The Tall Man and his silver spheres are probably the most appealing features of this movie. 5. BLACK CHRISTMAS Bob Clark who went on to direct A CHRISTMAS STORY, directed suspense thriller/slasher that, yes, came before HALLOWEEN and FRIDAY THE 13TH. The claustrophobic atmosphere and phone calls made by the killer are the highlights of this little known sleeper. The killer who is never seen is possibly one of the eeriest to, well, never grace the screen. One memorable scene is that of a woman getting killed while carolers sing outside of the house. 4. BATTLE ROYALE This Japanese/Korean film is the best that I've seen. What seems to be a far-fetched plot is turned into reality by the intensity of the action that takes place. Horror and wrestling fans will enjoy this movie about a class of high school students brought to an island in which they must kill their friends in order to survive. The action never stops, and viewers will feel their own hearts beating rapidly until the credits roll. 3. PSYCHO Not much to say that hasn't been said already. Alfred Hitchcock's greatest film and what many of those professional film critics consider to be the greatest slasher movie of all time. 2. HELLRAISER Clive Barker brings Hell to Earth with this incredibly imaginative film about a puzzle box that summons demons when solved correctly. I don't think the originality of this movie can ever be topped. The demons known as cenobites in the HELLRAISER series are unforgettable, especially Pinhead who has a huge cult following. See this movie. It is a favorite of many horror fans. 1. HALLOWEEN Like there was even another choice for me. HALLOWEEN is the greatest horror movie of all time. Michael Myers is the face of evil: The emotionless expression, the black eyes, and the strong determination to wreak havoc. The atmosphere is real along with the characters. The reality of the whole movie makes it all seem possible. John Carpenter and Debra Hill created a masterpiece with HALLOWEEN and no movie shall ever surpass it in my opinion.
