Pros: Dependable, simple, TONS of game types available.
Cons: Graphics aren't as cutting edge as the newer generation of consoles.
The Bottom Line: I still love my PS2 and don't think I'll be replacing it any time soon.

| ltrain's Full Review: Sony PlayStation 2 Slimline Console |
After a lifetime as a gamer I've found myself in the position of always chasing the new console system. From Atari to Atari 2600 to Nintendo and so on I've followed the trends and had the newest system as soon as it came out. The same is true with Playstation 2...I waited a little longer than usual so it could be given to me as a college graduation present but the concept still applies: I am a gamer through and through.
It's hard to believe but I've finally found a system that keeps me from moving on. Playstation 2 is my go to system even now with the release of Playstation 3 and XBox 360.
What you get
When you buy a Playstation 2 you get the console, a cable to connect it to your television, a cable to plug it into the electric outlet in your wall, and a controller.
What you need
Right out of the box you'll need to spend $20 or so on a memory card. You simply can't do much at all without this card.
What it does
Playstation three connects to your television (and surround sound systems!) and allows you to play DVD movies, audio CDs, and of course Sony Playstation games. These games come in disc form (same size as a DVD) and slide into an opening tray on the front of the console just like a DVD rom drive on your computer.
It's durable
I've had my Playstation 2 for six years now and it's still going strong. Granted, I take care of my things but this hasn't been a problem for me. It just sits on the shelf and plays away. I'd wager that I've put in over a thousand hours on this system (conservative estimate) without so much as cleaning a disc or vent.
You can get anything!
There are so many types of games available for Playstation 2 that it's difficult to list them all. You will need accessories for some (like a wireless guitar, microphone, dance pad, or additional controllers) but these are all readily available and often sold with the game.
My favorite games? They come in categories.
Sports:
Madden football series is king with me.
NBA Live series for great basketball.
Fight Night series for boxing.
WWE games provide pro wrestling excitement.
Music:
Karaoke revolution if you like singing.
Dance Dance Revolution is dancing is your style.
Guitar Hero for those of you who want to play the instrument.
Violence:
Grand Theft Auto series for 'Gangsta' action.
God of War for fantasy themed massacring.
Hitman is a first person shooter of renown.
How it sounds
I've hooked my PS2 into the surround sound system and it supports it without trouble. When you play football it sounds like watching an NFL playoff game! Shooting games tend to give great audio and the surround sound setup is exploited to put you in the games.
When watching DVDs you won't know the difference between PS2 and a standard DVD player which is a very good thing.
How it looks
As a DVD player it's as good as any non-HD DVD player I've used. Crisp, clear, and bright are all words to describe the PS2 images.
When you play games you'll find the same words apply. Clearly over a six year span game quality has improved so newer games (Madden 2008) will look much better than their older brothers (Madden 2002) but that is true with any system I've ever had. These games aren't photo realistic like the newer generation systems but they are plenty good enough to entertain most gamers. Only the young or the really hardcore will want for more than the newest PS2 games can provide.
Overall:
PS2 supports a wide array of games, always works, and also serves as an entertainment system for activities other than games. It's so much more than the systems that came before and it is very nearly the perfect system for the adult gamer. At a price point of $100 or less as it runs now it's a steal that I'd add to my collection again if mine was to break down.
