Stardust is one of those films that really tried to present something "outside the box" of fantasy films, and give a story that was both original in presentation and story. It seemed to have a big fan-fair when it started showing previews, but when it hit theaters it didn't do all that well, and quickly faded away. That was too bad, because the film was very well done, and one of those fantasy films that could appeal to the whole family. Its blend of action, intrigue, magic, and of course the central quest made it very interesting indeed.
The star of the attraction is Charlie Cox as Triston Thorn, a boy that has grown up in a small village, never knowing about his past. The secret to him, but revealed to the audience, is that his father made a journey into a magical city, and the result of the trip was Triston. He has never met his mother, but all the years of being kept in the dark about his origin is about to change as the story starts to unfold in front of us. In his case though, you could say that his world is about to come crashing down.
In what would seem almost an innocent quest, Triston has set off to find a fallen star that he has promised the woman of his dreams. It is really only the woman he thinks to be his future, as she doesn't feel the same way about him that he does, and has sent him on the quest to prove his love. It paints her in a bad light right from the beginning, but that is all right, because there are bigger plans for Triston. When he does succeed in finding the star, it is not at all what he expected, as the star is in human form (played by Claire Danes).
Torn between taking the star back to his crush or helping her on her own journey, the film starts to pick up speed. Unfortunately for him, he is not the only one seeking the star, as a which played by Michelle Pfeiffer wants to retrieve the star to gain eternal beauty from her. Mix into the equation a set of brothers that are battling for the crown of the area, and you have an intermixed story that is going to blend greed, magic, destiny, and character into an action-fantasy film testing every ounce of Triston.
The movie was very well done, and the scenery really pumps up the sequence of events in the story. All of the acting is well done, especially that of Robert De Niro in the role of a sky pirate holding on to a secret of his own. The movie was very exciting, and the pacing superb, leading to me enjoying the film with only one small fault. There needed to be a little more drama when it came to the interactions of some characters, and I felt they could have made some moments a little scarier to bring out the best emotions of the characters/actors. Setting that aside, I found this to be a very interesting film that kept my attention, and now gets my recommendation as a film that everyone in the family could enjoy.
