Work Study, A Great Way To Fill The Gap Between ClassesDec 27 '04 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line The bottom line is checking it out! There are several kinds of Work Study Programs available on campus. Some are Federally sponsored and others are University sponsored. At Louisiana State University the two most common are Federal Work Study and Chancellor's Student Aid. To find out what is available at your campus visit the Scholarship and Student Aid office before you apply for admission. Many of these scholarships are awarded several months before the semester begins and are limited so it is essential to get your application in early. Some are based on parent's salary, some are based on your academic standing. What Is Work Study? Work Study Programs allows you to work on campus. When your application is approved you are awarded a specific amount of money. That amount goes into an account on campus. You receive the money as you work at an hourly rate at a department on campus. How Does It Work? When your application is approved the amount of your award goes into an account. You are assigned a department on campus to work for. This is generated by the the preferences you put on your application. It is matched up with a department on campus seeking a student to work in specific areas. You will be assigned an hourly rate by your department. This is usually done by examining your previous experience and your overall general first impression that you make when you report to duty. You will be paid bi-weekly from timesheets submitted to the department. The funds come from the account previously set up for your award. Of course everyone wants to make a high hourly rate. There are advantages to this, of course. You are paid more money. However, if you want your award to last all semester it is better to go with a mid-range figure ($6.00-7.50/hr). This will all depend on the number of hours you are available to work per week. At LSU, students are allowed to work a maximum of 20 hours a week. This should leave sufficient time for students to attend class and do homework. When your award is spent out, the department has the option to hire you on their funds. Some departments do not have money to do this so it is best to estimate your award to last for an entire semester unless you have previously worked for same department and have made previous arrangements. Can The Awards Be Revoked? Yes, your scholarship can be taken away for violating University Rules. You should check with your University beforehand to know what these rules are. What If I Don't Like My Assignment? If you do not like the department or the job you were assigned to, you can return to your Scholarship and Student Aid Office and ask for a reassignment. These are generally granted as long as another department is looking for a student to fill a job. You should have a valid excuse for wanting to change your assignment. I've heard some lame excuses and the most famous is, "this is just too far on the other side of campus for me." My thoughts on this is if you want a job, you should be thankful. LSU is a big campus. You walk wherever you go because parking is such a pain. Students are used to walking and I don't consider the above a good excuse for wanting to transfer to another department. But if you are having a personality conflict with your supervisor or just can't work the hours needed you have a good reason to ask for a reassignment. What Happens If I Don't Use All Of My Award? In most cases you will lose the money. That is another reason you should calculate the number of hours you are available to work by your salary. Keep track of this. It is your money and you should be responsible in keeping up with your balance. Final Thoughts A Work Study job is a great way to gain experience. It is also a convenient way to earn extra money. You don't have to leave campus to go to work and you can even work during that 2-3 hour break between classes. Work Study is there for you, it is up to you to take advantage of it. © 2004 Birdfeather |
