Well, not everyone who is lost in time has a time machine, but presumably I could see most of these movies in 2005 (TCM schedulers willing). I'm sure that Borges could review movies not yet made, but I am mired(or is it wallowing?) in the cinema past.

With great trepidation, I opened the posted epinion to alter the title and it was not consumed by the demons who turn diacritics into caca.

It's not 2009 yet? The four more years haven't even begun yet? Bummer!

The "Winter Kills" DVD extras and commentary track are more interesting than the movie, which is, shall we say "murky"? You triggered a mini-festival of Jeff Bridges movies in my household this month. Thanks, I think.

I haven't seen any John Ford silent movies, but the first version of "Three Godfathers" (1916) was directed by
Edward Le Saint. The author of the original novel Peter B. Kyne was born and died in San Francisco (1880-1957).

And between the Wyler and Ford versions, there was a 1936 verstion directed by Richard Boleslawski with Chester Morris, Walter Brennan, and Lewis Stone, names unfamiliar to many, but not to you, I'm sure.

a lean 'm movie writing-about machine?

I've thought of another rash of movies I saw this year and didn't write about, so even more a couch potato...

My sense of Barbara Stanwyck is that she could do whatever she decided to do, so that even if she had never cooked before, she would have read her old columns and managed. That is, she was never helpless though pretending to be in "Lady Eve" (and, I guess, in "Sorry, Wrong Number." My man of the month, Fritz Lang, had the highest regard for her professionalism in, among other things, dealing with Marilyn Monroe fever all around while making "They Clash By Night" (which I plan to wach again soon and add to my Lang writeoff that is still one-man; wanna join it?)

Stephen: You have been busy, seeing films and people I've always loved, and some I have not experienced.

Without checking, I think you will find that THREE GODFATHERS was made three times, once by Ford as a silent. I've always thought it was underrated Ford because it got both the sentiment and the sentimentality rightly placed.

And Warren William! Donald Sutherland has always struck me as his replacement.

Too much to comment upon. I'm off for Niebaum-Coppola.

Happy Hogmanay, Stephen.

the amount of reviews you have written this year, something to be proud of..:)

Last night I watched the "Life and Death of Peter Sellers"...Geoffrey Rush was incredible and I enjoyed the movie immensely...I have to get my hands on "Being There" it's been ages since I've seen it...

Thanks and best wishes for a happy, safe, and healthy New Year

Not having cable I probably won't see these anytime soon, but Americanization of Emily is at least on VHS. Agree about 3 Godfathers and Christmas in Connecticut was pretty charming.

My main time travel machine is called Turner Classic Movies. Sometimes I step aboard the Fox Movie Channel.

of grist for the ole thinking mill in this compilation, Steve. I won't try to address all your excellent blurbs but will agree Anthony Adverse blows chunks. The very worst Fredric March I can remember and it's part of my video collection. I like Loretta Young's looks better than you and got a kick out of your mention of Elizabeth & Essex. Davis was not as good a Quene Bess as Flora Robson, although she did go over the top. Flynn almost lost some teeth when Bette whacked him with that handful of jewelry. She hated his guts according to reports.

Great job, happy anniversary and happy eleventeen hundert reviews! ;->

As I said, most are not in the database (and not on VHS or DVD). I think you have consumed the 149 fuller reviews and are one of a handful therefore in a position to complain! I'll try to do better next year--and still have the backlog mentioned at the end of movies to review.

I would be hoping for full reviews of all these, but you did 149 last year. So, I suppose I can't complain. I do enjoy your thoughts on movies and other things here. Glad you gave a quick run down if not full reviews on all these.
