To Make the List...Dec 31 '04 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line That's it. Sorry to those I dissapointed. I'll just say what everybody thinks: there aren't very many good movies out there, and when one is released, explanation is impossible. To write an essay on a good movie is about as hard as to do one on a good book. My definition of a good movie is one that makes you think, even for a little while, and one that involves imagery, unique cinematography, and little soundtrack. Yeah...movies like Fargo and the Usual Suspects don't have much music, and that's great. Some movies like The Lord of the Rings are focused in music; there are exceptions to this rule, as there are to any rule, such as Mr. Hollands Opus and Shine, but I suppose those movies are ABOUT music. Never mind... 10. Pulp Fiction Directed by Quentin Tarantino Starring Samuel L. Jackson Specific Genre: Crime/Drug thriller The first time I saw this movie, I didn't fully appreciate artistic quality, which sort of clouded my judgement. But as I watched it more and more, I realized that the elongated scenes (and especially the screenplay) are some of the most amazing in pictures. It was passed for an academy award due to violence, because "violence does not make the movie," but clearly nothing else does either, because Big Fish didn't win any awards. There isn't much violence anyway. 9. Fargo Directed by Joel Coen Starring Francis McDormand Specific Genre: Comedy Crime Thriller This movie far surpasses any sort of thriller expectations I would ever have. It's almost impossible for me to describe what you will feel when you see the movie. From now on, I'm sorry to say, there will be no more film descriptions, because the movies I will list are impossible to describe. Just see them, okay? 8. Edward Scissorhands Directed by Tim Burton Starring Johnny Depp Specific Genre: Fantasy Drama 7. The Usual Suspects Directed by Bryan Singer Starring (best cast ever) Gabriel Byrne, Stephen Baldwin, Benicio Del Toro, Kevin Pollack, and Kevin Spacey Specific Genre: Crime Thriller 6. Shine Directed by Scott Hicks Starring Geoffrey Rush Specific Genre: Piano Drama 5. Trainspotting Directed by Danny Boyle Starring Ewan McGregor Specific Genre: Drug Comedy 4. Dr. Strangelove Directed by Stanley Kubrick Starring Peter Sellers, Peter Seller, Peter Sellers Specific Genre: War Comedy 3. Millers Crossing Directed by Joel Coen Starring Gabriel Byrne Specific Genre: Gang Thriller 2. Barton Fink Directed by Joel Coen Starring John Turturro Specific Genre: Drama/Thriller 1. Rushmore Directed by Wes Anderson Starring Bill Murray Specific Genre: Comedy |
