Put a sock in it

The Bottom Line
I'm pretty picky about my socks. Socks serve as a barrier between my shoes and me. Not having socks would be a problem for me since the material on the inside of the shoes feels uncomfortable. Socks are thus an important decision. That being said, how do you choose socks? There are many factors, such as style, material and color.
You also have to consider why you're wearing them. Is it a casual, formal or athletic event that you're going to? I'm not much of an athlete, so I can't give much advice for athletic wear. However, I am told that there are socks designed for sporting events. I also tend to avoid formal events, going only when necessary. On such occasions, I usually wear the same socks I wear in a casual setting. People tend not to look at your socks. (Those that do can't usually see my socks since I'm wearing long pants, anyway.)
That leaves the casual events. I tend to go for plain, white socks. If you go into a department store, you'll be given all sorts of colors and patterns. You may even be able to find something with your favorite sports team's logo on it. I shop at Wal-Mart for socks. They're cheap and available. I don't need anything fancy when it comes to socks. When you shop at a department store, you can expect to pay more. (This is due mostly to the fact that you're looking at higher-end socks, designed for formal events.)
My socks come up a few inches above my ankle. I once wore my brother's socks when I ran out once. His were ankle-high socks, which left me feeling like I wasn't wearing any socks at all. This is not an experience I would care to repeat. Higher socks tend to be too much of a chore. However, you may find that you prefer a different length. You can probably get one that you like if you look around.
There are also a variety of materials, such as cotton and Nylon. I've generally found that I like cotton the best, although I don't have a problem with other materials. Some people do have allergies. (You should know yours before buying socks. If you don't, the worst that should happen is irritation.) For most people, material won't be a big deal. It will come down to what you find to be the most comfortable.
If you've never purchased your own socks before, you're probably wondering how to know which size to get. Most packages I've seen show a range of shoe sizes on the package. Find the one that includes your size. This isn't difficult.
Make sure that you keep a steady supply of socks. I would recommend going through at least one pair of socks a day. (You might want to go through more depending on how active you are.) Since laundry in my house is done once a week, I usually try to keep a two-week supply of socks. This shouldn't be a problem; you can get a half-dozen pair of regular socks for just a few dollars if you shop around.
Granted, your choice in socks won't cause empires to fall or buildings to collapse, but it is important to you. I hope that what I've written helps you.
