Bang For The Buck
Pros:some good acting by the children
Cons:everything else
The Bottom Line: This movie was hyped up, and even without the hype it still would have been a disaster. Only redeeming values is the acting.
Boy did I have high expectations for this movie. The first trailer I saw for this movie made me say to the person next to me (don't worry I knew him )"Man I wanna see this movie!" So it was the Tuesday before it opened that I went to the sneak preview. I was so excited! Soon I was trying to wade through its convoluted plot with a frown on my face. The plot is based (VERY LOOSELY) on Lewis Carrol's poem The Jabberwocky. Two children find a mysterious box at their beach house. Inside the box are "toys" (they're actually alien technology). Along with these toys is a stuffed rabbit (the only thing remotely resembling a toy the other things are shiny rock-like objects that spin) who Emma (the younger child) names Mimzy. Here's where the plot thickens. The two children (Noah and Emma) get swept up into a plot involving mandalas, Tibet, Lewis Carrol's book, fortune telling, sound, aliens, Adam and Eve, talking rabbits, super powers (kind of), the FBI, and a horrible case of product placement (Intel gets put into the thick of it and it is unresolved.) This isn't even all of it. Rainn Wilson's (who plays Dwight in the popular TV show "The Office") character does nothing to help the plot. In fact, he just makes it worse. The actors who play the parents don't seem as concerned as they should be. The only actor (or should I say actress) who is really good is Rhiannon Leigh Wryn who plays Emma. She is good at conveying the emotions she is supposed to be (as opposed to the parents) and does a great job playing her part. I really wanted to like this movie. I had such great exceptions, but they fell so short. I kept telling myself, "Well this part wasn't bad, and neither was this part. And that's partially true, because one of the actors was good, and the special effects weren't bad either. Unfortunately, that's not enough to redeem this poorly written, poorly executed, movie. Many people are heralding this movie as "the best sci-fi, family movie since E.T." Sadly, couldn't disagree more.
