BeastieGirl's AGAINST THE GRAIN Write-Off

Jan 06 '05 (Updated Mar 30 '05)

The Bottom Line Write about anything that you have a strong, but minority opinion about! Let's challenge ourselves and our leaders! This write-off is about speaking up (for yourself!)

I have been a member of Epinions for 6 years now (ok, really 5 as Tigerlily reminded me, but still, it's my 6th year- and don't we all like to exaggerate the truth just a little- at least until we hit 30?) and thought it was time to make my mark. I have been watching and reading and rating (and sometimes writing!) on this site for quite a while. Now, I may have periods of unfaithfulness to Epinions, where my life is just too hectic, but overall, I keep coming back. Some faces are very familiar and I have a few people that I actually e-mail every once in a while outside of Eps, but mostly it's a friendly comment here or there as the extent of my Internet relationships. I feel like I have been hanging around in the shadows of the more "popular crowd", but that's ok. I still participate. And although I've never carried a hat or had a wildly huge WOT, I feel as though I have contributed to Epinions in a positive way. So far, I don't think I've ruffled any feathers (although sometimes the drama gets a hold of me and I love to watch the fights) of any members. So now I'd like to step up to the mike and start my own thing.

The Against The Grain write-off. The rules are pretty simple. Write a review on any subject in which your opinion is of the minority. For example, the average rating of the first Harry Potter novel was 5 stars. If you detested the book, write about it! Speak up! If you absolutely love America West Airlines, profess your love! If you really want to stir up some controversy, write an editorial!

Epinions is all about subjective matter. This site is a place for people to come to make buying decisions about products and services. As reviewers on this site, shouldn't we be committed to providing a well rounded view? I love a good debate and hope that entries in this write-off will spawn some good ones. Of course, be respectful and polite, that should go without saying here, as we're all (mostly) adults.

If you want to participate, please e-mail me so I can add a link for you. Write as many reviews as you'd like- this write-off should be open to all. Because it may take a little while to find something that fits the against the grain category, I would like to open the write-off through to February 14, how fitting, a day of love...

I'm a little scared in launching this, as I know it's not going to be as popular as the "getting to know you" write-offs or Sleeper54's Lean N Mean, but hopefully it will at least generate some good comments and give the bored writer something to be inspired by.

Good luck and as Gungian would say "Write on!"
