Re: I still remember the last time (Reply to this comment)

We should get some T-shirts made up with our names, the mascots of the schools where we played this lovely game, a team-number of one (unless you have a few friends who also qualify to join you, then, you would rank accordingly. You could even sew letters on this t-shirt: OUCH. That way, you'd be a letterperson!
IMO, that game is perverted!
Ciao!

I still remember the last time I played Red Rover: March 10, 1973. I was subjected to this game a lot in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and I was the worst Red Roverer in history. I can relate completely to what you went through!

I write a few other places, too. Also, put out three books this past summer. Find more details by checking out the three links I've put in the area just above the mini-profile on my profile page!
You should write your own memories of this dreadful game!
We ought to have an "I Hate Red Rover!" W/O around here!

You must really enjoy the craft, because this is the only place I ever see you writing. Great story! Red Rover... god I hated that game. :)

Re: The version of that game--- (Reply to this comment)

We played dodgeball in ninth-grade gym class, and it was fun!
We used soft balls (not as in the baseball type of softball, but I mean balls that wouldn't hurt you) and could only hit from the waist down (or, maybe, even lower--almost seems as if the balls were aimed for the feet and ankles. All I remember is that I was very comfortable playing the game the way it was played!).
IMO, kids shouldn't be required to participate in activities that cause discomfort. I mean, what's the point?
It only teaches that it's fair for you to get hurt by somebody else, and you have no right to either say "No!" or to complain.
Imagine this transferring to spousal-abuse or rape!
Thanks for your feedback!

The version of that game--- (Reply to this comment)
by gaviidae
---we played was called:
Pum-pum-pullaway
and as I recall, it could get pretty rough!
Saw some coverage recently about kids getting hurt playing Dodgeball in gym class, so I guess it still goes on!
I remember in about ninth grade being compelled to play Commando Soccer---which had no rules and no boundaries. Just go after the one with the ball!
Thanks for your story!

I've never heard of that game--probably a simply lovely one like Red Rover!!! I'd be interested in details. If you ever write about your experiences with it, be sure to put the URL here!

For me it was any time we had to play a game called "trench" in phy ed class. I am so glad I never have to go back to that!
