| tompee's Full Review: Palm IIIe Personal Organizer |
Being a college student, I wanted a PDA to organize my daily schedule, handle my accounts, and have enough memory to save a few games so that I could keep myself occupied during class.
I previously owned a Mindspring PDA and just wasn’t completely satisfied with it. I need a PDA that could match my taste for quality features, durability, and style. I wanted a PDA that was affordable so that I would still be able to eat for the next month or so. I promised myself that I would purchase a PDA for about $150, and that would fulfill my every wish. I went to my nearest Best buy and was pleasantly surprised with the Palm IIIe.
The 411 Info
After talking with the Bestbuy representative, I learned a lot about the Palm IIIe. I found out that it runs with a OS 3.1 platform using a 16MHz processor. It comes with a standard 2MB of RAM which I believe can be upgraded but I decided not to.
The Size
It weights a mere 6 ounces which is pretty damn light. You can carry it in the back of you pant pocket and wouldn’t even feel it. It measure 4.5 inches x 3.8 inches x 0.8 inches. This is a pretty standard size PDA for Palm though you can purchase thinner ones or thicker ones. Mindspring usually has PDAs that are a little thicker.
The Goodies
The Palm IIIe comes with a standard hotsync connector which you can connect with your desktop to download email, various news, games, programs from the internet. I found this particular hotsync much easier to use than the Mindspring that I previously had and it was much quicker to setup. There are a lot of other accessories that you can purchase with the IIIe. Older version Palm accessories would all work with this one in particular. I decided again purchasing a fancier Palm pen with an actual blue ink pen inside, or a foldable keyboard. I just thought it would be harder to carry around and would defeat the purpose of a portable organizer.
Looks
I particularly like the clear and clean look. Most PDAs have titanium or plastic finishes that are glossy and metallic. I like the IIIe clear finish because it is different from the rest and everybody seems to like it better. There aren’t really any functionality improvements with a clear casing except that its cooler and might get you more girls.
Final Thought
The IIIe is cheap and affordable for any college student. This is something your girlfriend can buy you or you can beg your parents for. It clearly gets the job done, especially with the hotsync, and it also looks cool. What is better than getting the job while looking good doing it? The answer … the Palm IIIe Special Edition.
