A Great Way To Keep In Touch!Jan 16 '05 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Students need your support! Whether you are sending your oldest, middle child or youngest off to college it can be a trying time and sometimes frightful for your child, especially if they have not been far away from home before. Let's face it, moving out of the house to a new city without any friends is enough to make anyone a bit upset. Care Packages can be a great way to keep in touch with your child and also provide things that he/she may not have enough money to purchase on their own. Since I work in a college environment that is one of the things I hear quite often..."I'm broke". When your child first leaves for college send a nice size box filled with goodies, staples, first aid and something they enjoy like a book by a favorite author. Here are some suggestions: First Aid Kit This one is essential and something your child may not think of packing. Little accidents can be painful and having a bandaid on hand will be appreciated. Some standard things to pack: bandaids (assorted sizes), antibiotic ointment, gauze, q-tips, scissors, peroxide, Tylenol, cold medicine, cough medicine and one odd item, a flashlight. You never expect the lights to go out but they will! Food Whether your child will be living in a dorm or an apartment, there will be times when he/she is broke or not feeling well and not wanting to go out for food. Most dorms now have microwaves or you can bring your own. Pack a few staples like a couple of cans of soup, tuna, microwave popcorn, Gatoraid ready to mix, etc. Phone Card Most people have cell phones these days but there are always times when you are out of service (bill being paid late or not paid at all, service out or bad reception, hurricane and all power goes out). Send a phone card to make sure your child can reach you in an emergency or to just call home and check in without using all their cell phone minutes. Snacks This one is well appreciated. Just tuck in a bag of favorite cookies, candy or other goodies to let them know you are thinking of them! Homemade treats from Mom's kitchen are even better! Just remember that cookies may arrive crumbled. Entertainment Toss in a favorite magazine, CD, DVD or paperback book for leisure time. Everyone needs a little time to relax. Besides, you don't really believe your student is studying that much, do you? Other Supplies Don't forget pens, pencils, a couple of notebooks or even small gift cards. Gift cards with just a mere $20-25 bucks will allow small purchases of items needed when the budget is busted. Another thing greatly appreciated are samples. You know those little packets you get in the mail? These are great for students. Full size personal care items can also be sent. Girls always love new bath and body products! Something From Home This will be the one most appreciated. A note or letter from home tucked inside! Be sure and include a note even if it is a short one! A copy of local newspaper, a photograph of friends and family is another appreciated item. Another item to pack in your care package is a pack of notecards or stationary, especially if you want a letter from your student. This will allow your child to write to other friends and relatives as well. And don't forget to include stamps too! I hope this helps you decide what to put in a care package for your college student. Care Packages are welcome throughout the year and is a great way to show support and boost the morale (especially during mid-terms and finals week). Care Packages say I Love You!
