A little more Ernie Freeman info (Reply to this comment)
by eastcoasterjim
Carmen Davis with Ernie Freeman's Combo "Your Kiss" (written by Hosea White & E. Middleton) b/w "No, No Baby" (written by E. Middleton) 7" 45RPM single on Middle-Tone 009-A/B. The matrix #'s are 45-FB-2510-D1/45-FB-2511-D1.
The labels list the follwoing musicians: Irving Ashby - guitar, Joe Comfort - bass, R.D. Martinez - drums, Plas Johnson - sax, and Ernie Freeman - piano.
I'm not sure, but maybe E. Middleton is the namesake of Middle-Tone Records

At last I learned about Ernie Freeman (Reply to this comment)
by keyrocker
I recorded a version of Bumble Boogie myself back in 1983, and did it as a slight variation on Ernie Freeman's B. Bumble version. It was only a few years ago that I even learned that Ernie played on that great rocking record from 1961. I always knew who he was since his "Raunchy" days, but never knew he made so many vital contributions and was so incredibly talented. Thanks for the great, expansive review, Jaguardog, fleshing out so many details of this great artist's life.

Ernie was my favorite instrumental musician in my college days. In fact every time I broke up with a girl--there was an new EF record to cheer me up. I had many of his 45's and 2 of his lp's. When his CD was released I was Overjoyed!! Its on my car stereo now. The big epinions article gave me a lot of insight.
I always wondered about the connection between Ernie Freeman and Ernie Fields--another CD I have on my car stereo.

Well known in LA (Reply to this comment)
by wally11
Ernie Freeman was well known here in Los Angeles.
His version of "Raunchy" was more of an R&B Rocker compared to Justis Country style version. Ernie's version flat plain rocked.
The sax player didn't show for Justis session so he played sax, although he was rusty at it. That and the opening guitar gave it a different sound.
Ernie's "Jamboree" is one of the best rockin' instrumentals around. It should have placed higher than it did.

Correction and additional Information (Reply to this comment)
by janismfree
I am Janis Freeman, the daughter of Ernie Freeman. I read your article about my father. It is obvious that you did a lot of research. Much of it is accurate, but some of is inaccurate. I want to give you some additional information. My father did not move to New York after Cleveland. Our family moved to Los Angeles in 1946 where he went to graduate school of music at the University of Southern California. He subsequently received his Masters of Music from USC. Some of the bands you reported that my father worked for are not accurate, but they are too many to coment on. My father played several instruments, but he did not play the guitar. He played the tenor sax, violin, piano, and organ, although he arranged the music for large orchestras requiring knowledge of all musical instruments. My father died on May 15, 1981 in Los Angeles. There may be some confusion because he had a part ownership in a night club in Hawaii. My father also wrote and arranged music for the Hawaiian group called S.O.S or Society of Seven. He is interned at Forest Lawn in Glendale, CA. He only had one child. Little known information, he recorded the hit record Chipmunk songs.
Additional info: Arranged and conducted
Channing Special 1967, Huckleberry Hound, Hanna-Barbera, Arranger and conductor for Leslie Uggums Show, received Grammy award for string section arrangements for "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" and best vocal arrangement for Frank Sanatra's "Stranger's In the Night". In the 1960's my father arranged for the Supremes, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin and too many others to name. He was responsible for 120 gold record singles and 25 gold albums. On top of all that, he was an African-American who broke many of the racial barriers in the music industry.

I had heard a vocal version of the song many, many, many years ago so I knew one existed somewhere since I couldn't remember who did the vocal version.

I had a ton more information on this great music genius but it was getting a little too long and didn't want to scare away readers.
"Oh my darling
Knock three times on the ceiling if you want me
Twice on the pipe if the answer is no
Oh my sweetness
Means you'll meet me in the hallway
Twice on the pipe means you ain't gonna show!"

Re: Kudos! (Reply to this comment)

My sentiments exactly!!!
It's amazing how this single man was involved in so many parts of the music industry--kinda like Forrest Gump showing up in different places in history! LOLOLOL
The Picnic/Moonglow song was "our song" for Gary and me when we were dating in 1970-1971.
One of them, anyway.
The other two were Knock Three Times, because one of my pet names for Gary was "my sweetness," and this term of affection was used in this song, and You've Made Me So Very Happy, because he called me one morning and told me he had a song he wanted to dedicate to me and then played it on his stereo.
That band made up of various kids reminds me of something Val (Valhakola24) talked about doing when she was in high school. She and her friends called themselves Heaven and got to play for a lot of benefits, receptions, etc. As with Freeman's group, the members varied from time to time.
Hugs!
