A must-have for a broadband home network

Written: Oct 02 '01
Pros:Easy to use/configure. Migrates easily between different kinds of broadband connections. Protects against hacking.
Cons:Occasionally hangs up. No PPPoA support.
The Bottom Line: In general, I am really impressed which how simple this makes some really heavy-duty networking power.

This router was recommended to me when I got a DSL line, to allow internet connection sharing without using software. I was able to put my account information into the router's easy to use web interface, and connect to my DSL provider via PPPoE (one of the DSL standards) without any problems at all. Then you configure the computers as if you were on a LAN (which you are, now), and they start surfing instantly. It allows connections over either bridged or PPPoE (but not PPPoA--though my DSL provider, BellSouth, allowed either oA or oE).
When I moved, I opted to try a cable modem instead. I was afraid that it would be more difficult since cable modems verify differently, but it turned out to be every bit as easy.
Other features offered are a DHCP server, so that it can assign IP addresses on your local network; Network Address Translation, that provides firewall security by relaying files between the WAN connection of your broadband service and the LAN connection; and MAC address cloning, which allows you to specify the hardware address of the router in case your broadband connection uses that for authentication and it is already set to your NIC.
I only have one computer on my cable modem now, but I still use this router as a firewall, as cable modems are notoriously unsafe.
Since the interface is web based, it can be used with any operating system out there, but beware if you want to update the firmware, that software is Windows only.
