The Best Opeth Songs...So Far!
by vanwarp | Jan 24 '05
Everything that I love about Opeth can be found within the following 10 tracks...aggressiveness, slow calming acoustic moments, atmospheric passages and a good mix of vocal styles overall.

Sadly enough, I think all the songs you mentioned in your "Honorable Mentions" deserved to take the top ten spots. Oh well, to each his own. I can understand why you didn't pick a song from Orchid; The album flows so well together, it feels like one 60 minute song, but there's no excuse for not picking a song from Morningrise. Shame on you! :P

I agree wholeheartedly. Morningrise stands in a league of its own. Every Opeth album is brilliant, but Morningrise is their masterpiece. It shocked me to hear on the Opeth "Lamentations" dvd, that Akerfelt really was not pleased with the outcome of that album.

Work your way back to Orchid, I'd say go to Still Life next, then My Arms Your Hearse and Morningrise before finally reaching their debut. I'm sure you'll find it a most interesting journey back to their early days...

In terms of the albums I listen to from Opeth, I haven’t yet graduated or properly checked out pre Blackwater Park material, though I know I should. Actually, I have heard nearly every song on here, but haven’t listened to the actual albums. Of these I think that’s a solid list, Deliverance would easily, or most likely made the top slot of my list if I was doing it, or maybe Harvest would have taken #1, who cares. Then the missing ones would be the Drapery falls (despite the mention), Windowpane, A Fair Judgement, the Blackwater park title track, and probably a lot of others.

But never mind me, nice list for one of my favorite bands. Good job

you just can't go wrong with Opeth. I think I would have A Fair Judgement and For Absent Friends on there! Anyway, great list!

Thanks booyaa...

I know...it was really tough not to include anything on my list from Orchid and not to include at least one track from Morningrise in my Top 10 was heart-wrenching. Believe me when I tell you that I struggled with this for several months...(see my reply to netnut for more insight)

And I’m not sure I agree with you that everything they’ve done post-Morningrise is not “in the same league as the Opeth of old.” Debut albums and sophomore releases are often what bands are remembered for. I believe, Opeth will be remembered and revered years from now for their contribution to progressive music in general. Everything they’ve done so far, they’ve done extremely well. Many have argued and will continue to criticize them for releasing albums that follow the same proven formula they’ve been using since Orchid. But progressive death metal is the preferred genre of music they choose to make and acoustic progressive rock (Damnation) is evidently not far behind. Regardless of the direction they take in the future...I'll be listening!

Minor quibbles are OK, that’s what makes us all very unique individuals...

You know, after Blackwater Park it was tough to pick my FAV Opeth album. They we’re all so good but at that time Orchid was simply a classic for me. It was the bands’ genre breaking debut and it also had “In Mist She Was Standing” and my personal FAV “Under The Weeping Moon.” Then they went and delivered us and then damned us all by releasing two albums back to back. Something had suddenly changed for me. I mean these guys could do no wrong. I never really gave it much thought until a kid asked me a few questions about this band and their music. He was looking to buy one of their albums and the funny thing was, Still Life seemed like the logical choice to “properly” introduce someone to the band. I guess you can say that Still Life is presently my FAV Opeth album. This - I realize - is subject to change over the years.

I guess I could have included a few more songs on my list of “honorable mentions”, but I only included those tracks that had scored much higher in the song by song face-off that I held to help narrow my list down to 10. In the end there wasn’t that much of a difference between one and sixteen. There was though a big drop between sixteen and seventeen and that was the reason I cut it off there, including only six songs in my “honorable mentions” list.

I predict their next album will be split in two in that it will include tracks that will bridge the music we found on both Deliverance and Damnation... :)

Thanks for the comment!

Hey van, great write up!

But, i must say, IMO this list is simply incomplete without anything from the first two albums. I'm strongly of the belief that Opeth have really lost their way since Morningrise (arguably their most critically acclaimed). Their style change frustrates me and i don't think anything post-Morning is even in the same league as the Opeth of old. That's why I'd argue this list seriously needs something from Morningrise or Orchid. But hey, power to the people. Good read despite my own minor quibbles
