ronzepinions's Full Review: Symantec Procomm Plus 4.8 (14-00-00402) for PC
Ok... Granted this is not software in today's day and age you are likely to run into or need for your personal computing needs unless you work with mainframes or minicomputers.
Today, most networking software is dominated by the wireless card in your computer or the modem/router you use to connect to the internet, giving away free drivers and software with the purchase of their product. This is less true in a corporate mainframe/mini computer environment.
I had used Procomm software YEARS ago with my old dial up modem and did a project recently for a company that used this product.
From a corporate connectivity point of view I will say, I was impressed. It had support for 36 different terminals, and a huge array host accesses.
Right from the start it had my attention as installing this on a new computer was quite easy. The program uses "SmartWizards" to make setup a simple proceedure very similar to the wizards that have become commonplace with most software today, and they are quite intuitive. When moving into connection mode the 'Connection Directory' shows you one-screen to access to all your phone and online entries. And to automate things even further the program uses ASPECT scripting language to automate repetitive communications functions, plus three disks of ready-to-use scripts to get you started. A very nice touch with this. Just pick the script to fit your needs, plug it in and "Voila!"
How did it work. Smoothly.
There were 11 high-speed protocols, including FTP for Internet downloads and the integrity of the data transferred was perfect throughout the time I used it. If there is an interruption, you can resume the transfer where you left off instead of starting all over again and your file transfers are protected by Symantec's own (and quite good) virus scanning.
The program also contains a set of fax tools that I have yet to put to any tests but the product information on them seems complete and I have no reason to believe the results would be any different on the fax side of things than it was on the internet side.
