The Bottom Line Finally, the return of the most popular music column!
Let's get into it, shall we? * It's been over a month, and yet, I still don't believe some nut got a gun into a show and killed Dimebag Darrell. And what kind of mother buys her schizophrenic son a gun? That woman should be brought up on accessory to murder charges as far as I'm concerned. F*cking wackjobs man. Rest In Peace Mr. Abbott, you deserved a better fate. * Speaking of wackjob mothers, how the hell Courtney Love got custody of her daughter back is beyond me... * Far be it from me to defend Ashlee Simpson, but she has a point about not having an ear monitor at that halftime show. Now, the fact that she was that much out of tune and sounded that bad is a totally different discussion. * They were just bumped off this week, but kudos to American record buyers for making Green Day number 1 for two weeks in a row this month. There may be hope for us yet. * I'm not quite sure what to think of two of the surviving members of Queen going out on tour with Paul Rodgers to perform Queen songs. On the one hand, it might be pretty cool to be able to hear these songs live, on the other hand, it isn't Freddie Mercury and I'm unsure to this day if anyone could ever really do what he did. One more case of money talking I guess... * You gotta feel for those poor U2 fans who paid $40 for a crack at tickets for the band's upcoming tour before they went on sale to the general public, only to have "preferred" seating in some cases be 10th row in the balcony on the other side of the arena from the stage. In many cases, the fans got totally shut out. As good as their music is, I can't help but wonder with each passing year if U2 is just becoming the new Rolling Stones. * Hopefully, Robert Plant got the crap out of his system with that terrible Dreamland album, and his new record, with his backing band Strange Sensation, will be a return to form. Plant has made a few good solo records, which made Dreamland all the more disappointing. * Warning: Three Doors Down has a new album coming out. Be on the lookout for bland sounding "rock" music on every type of radio format. Listening to excessive amounts of Three Doors Down can lead to depression and confusion as to whether it's any good or not. Please be assured that Three Doors Down is no good in any way, shape, or form for human or animal consumption. This has been a public service announcement. * Am I the only one who is sure that if the Motley Crue of twenty years ago saw the Motley Crue of now singing a song written by Simple Plan of all bands, that the Motley Crue of twenty years ago would have some a*s kicking to do? * Exactly who are these people giving record deals to Nick Lachey? The dude's career is o-v-a, ova! * Pearl Jam has 20+ songs or so written for their next album, and may debut some of them in March at a benefit show in Seattle. As far as I'm concerned, that's one new release that can't get here fast enough. And as far as I'm concerned, I hope it's their angriest record since Vitalogy...after election day, they should have plenty of vitriol. * It pains me to say this, since it will ultimately mean no reunion anytime soon, but congratulations to Dicky Barrett for his new morning drivetime gig on Indie 103, AKA the coolest radio station in the country. * Linkin Park deserves some major kudos for all they've done in organizing aid and shows for tsunami relief. * Am I the only one who thought "BRILLIANT!" when I saw the picture of Justin Hawkins flying through the air on a prop tiger in Rolling Stone recently? * OK, so you're Art Alexakis and somehow you don't file taxes at all for three or four years? What, you think someone in the IRS is gonna notice that a multiplatinum selling recording artist didn't file taxes for a couple of years? Christ, this started in 1999, when Everclear were still going strong on their So Much for the Afterglow album. This is right up there with Richard Hatch not reporting his million after winning the first Survivor. Can people really be this dumb? * Now honestly, whose bright idea was it to have The Donnas open for Maroon 5? Yes, let's have a band who sounds like the bastard childs of Kiss and AC/DC open for the most lavishly over-played, over-rated, and overly-annoying POP band since boybands died! The dude who thought of that must've been the same dude who thought giving Shifty from Crazy Town a record deal was a good idea. Five Songs I Can Do Without Ever Hearing Again: My Boo, Usher and Alicia Keys, I Just Wanna Live, Good Charlotte, Walk Tall, John Mellancamp, Enter Sandman, Metallica, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Nirvana Guilty Pleasure of the Month: Since U Been Gone, Kelly Clarkson: You know, if Avril had actually used some of the songs on KC's album on her own, maybe it wouldn't have sucked so damn badly. |
