My history with Adorama: As a professional photographer I have used Adorama as a source frequently. I have ordered items that cost as little as $2.99 and items that cost many thousands of dollars.
The site itself: The Good—On hand inventory is extensive and priced competitively. Navigation is relatively simple and the ability to create a wish list is certainly helpful though multiple wish lists would be even better (not currently available). Descriptions/Features/Specifications are more than sufficient since education is not the purpose of the site. The Not So Good—The site tends to be slow most notably when displaying search results. The search results offered are very often not nearly as specific as they should be. More search result filters would be helpful but they are not offered and thus your searches produce accurate results when your product name and model or manufacturer part number is accurate. There is no option to sort products alphabetically or by price.
Order Process: If they say it is in stock, my experience is that IT IS in stock. This is definitely not the case with any number of photography equipment sites. Buyer beware is applicable for many suppliers in this arena. At Adorama if you click BUY and they indicate in stock, you will receive the product in a timely manner. By timely I mean that it will ship within 24 hours as a rule. The actual “cart” and “checkout” process are simple and intuitive. For those not so familiar with online ordering…they’ll actually take your order over the phone and will even answer a question or two!!
Delivery: Packing has always been done with apparent care and I have never received any item in any condition other than expected. I have used basic ground service, though more frequently I use 2 day air. In either case the delivery time has been exactly what would normally be expected for the method selected. No hidden delays, never a sense that there was stalling while stock was ordered—again this does happen with OTHER suppliers out there so be careful.
Communication: Order confirmations are instantaneously received in your inbox. Shipping notifications and tracking information is equally timely. In the case of backorders you will receive updates and apologies regularly if the backorder time-frame is lengthy, and that is rarely the case. By the way…they will answer the phone! Now there is novel concept in out day of electronic commerce.
Overview/Summary: All of my orders, large or small, have all been handled with the same professional efficiency. I never hesitate to order from Adorama. Yes, there are some things they could improve as indicated above; however, when it comes to ordering photographic equipment online and often spending many thousands of dollars in the process integrity trumps price any day. My experience says that with Adorama you need have no worries.
