The 2004 In Retrospect Write-Off

Feb 04 '05

The Bottom Line What was 2004 in retrospect?

I figured that since it’s been a while since I took part in the the last shameless self-promotion survey write-off, it was time for me to jump in again and take part in dbcint’s 2004 in retrospect write-off. It’s a chance for everyone to recount 2004 – see what happened and how everyone’s been doing.

And since there wasn’t a question on my favorite color, I figured this is a cool idea.

If you’re interested in taking part in the write-off, visit dbcint’s 2004 In Retrospect Write-Off Page.

And let the information flow…

#1: Name one person you met who you met throughout the year that has made a lasting impression on you. Tell us about them.

This was actually a hard one for me. I’ve spent quite some time wondering exactly who I met in 2004 that made a lasting impression on me. There are a couple that went through my head…so I’ll do the best I can here, but unfortunately I didn’t have a chance to meet the Pope or anything that earth shattering, so my story is slightly more mundane.

One of my good friends had his first real relationship this year and from the 1st day I met his boyfriend, I was unimpressed to say the least (but who was I to say anything). He was sarcastic, he was mean and in general, I just couldn’t understand why my friend would like him. As you probably expect, it didn’t last for the whole year - but in the process of it – he managed to drive a wedge between the two of us for a time. I realized just how easy it is for people to manipulate each other. However some good came of it – we’re both better friends for it now (and we’re both trying to find out ways to make his life miserable).

#2: Was there a TV show you saw for the first time in 2004 – perhaps 2004 was it’s first season – that you now absolutely love?

I actual spent most of 2004 trying to stay away from TV.

I did however, get drawn into the new SciFi channel show Stargate Atlantis – and the older Stargate SG1 series in the process. I can’t say that I’m a regular viewer, but I do look forward to seeing it and I’ve enjoyed watching it.

#3: Tell us about the best movie you saw last year. It doesn’t have to be one that was released last year, just as long as you saw it for the first time in 2004. If possible, include a link to your review of it.

I don’t think I’ve been to the theater this year – but I did watch a couple of DVDs. Considering I can’t remember any of them, they must not have been that good.

#4: How about the worst movie you saw last year? Is there one that sticks out a mile – perhaps you wrote a scathing review on it.

Look back to #3…It’s just been a dry movie year for me.

#5: Was there an event that you wish people would just shut up about already?

The election.

I’m not happy with the results – but it’s over and done with and at the very least, he’s only 4 years left because he can’t run again.

#6: Was there a worldwide event that left you wondering what the world is coming to?

The Iraq war.

#7: Similarly, was there a worldwide event that made you happy?

The unselfish help that everyone has offered since the Tsunami.

(however, I am disappointed that in less than a month, this tragedy has almost disappeared from the American media)

#8: What were the best and worst albums you heard last year?

My favorite album of the year is R.E.M.’s Around the Sun. After being disappointed on their last album – I was pleasantly surprised when I heard this album. It’s not the same as any of their other albums, but it was a return to more of what I would have expected from R.E.M. – plus unlike their last album – I didn’t want to throw the CD out the window after listening to it. I also got to see R.E.M. in concert (yeah, free tickets at Mohegan Sun was cool), just as I was starting to listen to the new album and it was good.

The worst album? I’m not really sure – I pick and choose my music fairly carefully and didn’t run across an album that I was sorry I purchased.

#9: Which musician / band disappointed you?

Not really…but I’m sure there are some losers out there.

#10: Are there any writers who were newbies in 2004 that you highly recommend we read?

More so than in years past on Epinions, 2004 seemed to garner a great group of new writers that have stuck around to become writers I really enjoy…

trailhound / dpjohansen / yakkowarner / dizzybint / boudica

There are more - so I'm sorry if I missed you!

#11: What was the most significant event of the year? It could be local, international, or simply personal

Considering we live in Massachusetts where gay marriage is legal – my boyfriend and I have decided we will be getting married in October 2006. It’s one of the biggest decisions I’ve ever made and the whole decision is filled with questions, concerns, planning and more, but I think in the end, nothing more wonderful could be happening.

I know it might seem like a ways off – but you know, it’s got to be fabulous, so I need plenty of time to plan.

I just can’t wait to say “I do” and while I know right now we love each other more than anything, having that official piece of paper and having the chance to be in front of all of our friends and family and profess our love for one another is going to be simply amazing.

#12: Do you think your life is on the right track for where you want to end up? How did 2004 affect this?

I think for the most part it is.

I’ve given up smoking (6 months now almost) and I’ve gotten myself significantly healthier than I have been in a while.

I might not be perfectly content about my job – but I have one and I get paid well.

I’m sure that things will change – but overall – I’m happy with the way that my life is heading.

#13: Was there anything else significant about 2004 you’d like to add?

My best friend, who I’ve known since nursery school is going to be getting married to this wonderful woman and he’s asked me to be his Best Man. It was kind of funny too since I was about to ask him to be my Best Man for my wedding. It just made me think about how we are all growing up and building our lives.
