THE HEAT IS ON, SMUGGLER’S BLUES, YOU BELONG TO THE CITY – GLENN FREY

Feb 04 '05

The Bottom Line ”Glenn Frey” was born on 6 November 1948 in (the Motor city) Detroit, MI. He was in the back-up band for “Bob Seger” before Bob formed “The Silver Bullet Band”.

Glenn attended school at Dondero High School in Royal Oak, MI where in 1966 he formed the band called "The Hideouts" named after their local area teen club. They soon after changed their names to "The Subterraneans" and then changed their name again to "The Mushrooms". The members of "The Mushrooms" were Glenn as lead vocalist, "Bill Barnes" on lead guitar, "Lenny Mintz" on drums and "Doug Gunch" on rhythm guitar. The group would appear live on a local Detroit TV show called "Robin Seymour's Swinging Time". They next get a permanent gig playing at The Hideout. The teen club also had it's own small independent label called "Hideout" records operated by the clubs mangers "Dave Leon" and "Punch Andrews". The group released their debut single "Such A Lovely Child" with the record being written and produced by "Bob Seger" who was also from the Detroit area. During this period Glenn was self teaching himself how to play the guitar. Because the other members were regularly getting high and the record failed to make the charts the group quickly disbanded.

Andrews per the request of bassist "Jeff Alborell" of the local folk-rock group called "The Four Of Us" had Frey join their band. Jeff would help Glen hone his vocal and six-string guitar skills. The group was not together long after Frey joined them and after "The Four Of Us" disbanded Glenn and Jeff formed "The Heavy Metal Kids". This group's members were Glenn on vocals and guitar, Jeff on guitar, "Lance Dickerson" formally of "Billy C And The Sunshine" on drums, "Paul Kelcourse" on lead guitar and "Steve Burrows" on keyboards. After a few months of playing high school dances, sock hops, and teen clubs Glen decided he wanted to leave and move to Los Angeles. Glenn, Jeff and Lance all decided to travel to the West Coast together in a Van they had recently purchased. They first arrived in Oakland, CA. where they stayed with "Larry Welker" who was playing guitar for "Charlie Musselwhite". They stayed with Larry for a week and then moved on to Los Angeles.

Glenn first met "J. D. Souther" the day he arrived in Los Angeles in the summer of 1968. The two musicians became great friends and rented a house together along with friend "Jackson Browne" in Echo Park, CA. They next signed a deal with "Amos" records a small local independent label and decided to call themselves "Longbranch Pennywhistle". On 21 December "The Bob Seger System" released the single "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" backed by "Tales of Lucy Blue" on "Capitol" records that peaked at #17 on the pop chart. It has been rumored for many years that Glenn provided uncredited rhythm guitar work on "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man". "Longbranch Pennywhistle's" very first release was a self-titled album in September 1969. Other artists who appeared on this album were "James Burton", "Ry Cooder", "Buddy Emmons", "Jim Gordon", "Doug Kershaw" and "Larry Knechtel" but it failed to chart. They never recorded another record together but stayed good close friends for many years.

Glenn next met "Don Henley" who was born on 22 July 1947 in Gilmer, TX at the Troubadour in Los Angeles one night in early 1971. Henley began playing drums with a small High School band of teens in 1963 calling themselves "The Four Speeds". That band would later become "Shiloh" and in May 1970 the group moved to Los Angeles. "Shiloh" recorded one self-titled album on "Amos" records a small local independent label. The album was produced by "Kenny Rogers" but it failed to chart. Don told Glenn that "Al Perkins" who played pedal steel guitar in his group just recently left and joined "The Flying Burrito Brothers" so his band was going nowhere. Glenn then asked Don if he wanted to go on the road with him as a band member to backup "Linda Ronstadt" and earn $200.00 dollars a week. Don jumped at the chance because he had not toured on the road before. They also recruited the remaining 2 members of "Shiloh", brothers Michael Bowden" and "Richard Bowden" for the back-up group.

During the summer part of their tour they added "Randy Meisner" who was born on 8 March 1946 in Scottsbluff, NE on bass whom had recently left the group "Poco". They also recruited "Bernie Leadon" who was born in Minneapolis, MN on 19 July 1947 on guitar who had just left "The Flying Burrito Brothers. Frey, Henley, Leadon and Meisner played in the group all at the same time for one performance at Disneyland in California in July. The four also recorded together on Ronstadt's self-titled album that would be released the following year. After they completed their road tour and returned to Los Angeles Frey and Henley recruited Meisner playing bass and guitarist Leadon. Meisner in the early 1960's was with the Nebraska group "The Dynamics". He next moved to Denver, CO to join the group "The Soul Survivors". This was not the same group from Philadelphia that had a #4 pop hit in 1967 with "Expressway To Your Heart". The group Bernie joined in Colorado was a garage-rock, punk-pop type band that had a few minor local hits. One of these hits was titled "Can't Stand to Be In Love With You".

In 1966 the band moved to Los Angeles and changed their name to "The Poor". This group had 4 obscure local hits from 1966 to July 1968, none of which made the top 100 of the National chart. One single written by "Tom Shipley" of "Brewer & Shipley" fame titled "She's Got The Time (She's Got The Changes)" made the charts, but only on the bubbling under 100 chart at #133. In August 1968 "The Poor" split up with "Allen Kemp" and "Pat Shanahan" joining the "New Riders Of The Purple Sage". Randy joined "Richie Fury", and "Jim Messina", formally of "Buffalo Springfield", "Rusty Young", and "George Grantham" formally of "Boenzee Cryque" to form a new group called "Pogo". In March 1969 threatened with a lawsuit by "Walt Kelly" the comic strip creator of "Pogo" the band changed their name to "Poco". The following month as the band is preparing to begin their first recording session, Meisner quits the group due to a personality clash. After leaving "Poco" Glenn decided to return home to Scottsbluff and begins work at the John Deere Tractor Company.

In May Randy is recruited by "Rick Nelson" to play bass and to help form his "Stone Canyon Band" with "Alan Kemp" on guitar, "Tom Brumley" on steel guitar and "Pat Shanahan" on drums. Their first recording together is "She Belongs To Me" backed by "Promises" that debuts on 11 October and would peak at #33 on the pop singles chart. Randy performs on Nelson's next album "Rick Nelson In Concert" that they recorded live at the Troubadour and was later released in January 1970. It peaked at #54 on the US album chart and was Rick's 1st charting album in 6 years. On 7 March "Easy To Be Free" and "Come On In" both composed by Nelson debuts on the singles chart and peaks at #48. In November they release "Rick Sings Nelson" and it peaks at #196 on the album chart. This is followed in June 1971 by "Rudy The Fifth" but it fails to make the album charts. Randy next helps Nelson record the EP "Gypsy Pilot" with "Love Minus Zero" and "No Limits" and then decides to leave the band in June. The EP was released in November but fails to make any of the charts.

Leadon had first played the banjo in 1962 with the "Scottsville Squirrel Barkers" with "Chris Hillman" who would go on to become a member of "The Byrds". Bernie next moved to Florida and played in several local Florida bands before he moved to Los Angeles in 1967. He next replaced "Rick Cunha" in the group "Hearts & Flowers" and recorded with them on their 2nd album "Of Horses Kids And Forgotten Women". In August of that year he joined "Dillard & Clark" to help them record their debut album on "A&M" records titled "Fantastic Voyage". In May 1969 he moved on to "The Corvettes" replacing "Jeff Hanna" and in 1969 helped back up "Linda Ronstadt" on her "Summer '69 Tour". In September he joined Hillman again this time in "The Flying Burrito Brothers" until leaving in July 1971.

In August 1971 "David Geffen" the president of "Asylum" records is urged by his secretary to visit "Jackson Browne" at his home in Echo Park. When he arrives he hears Frey, Leadon, Meisner and Henley practicing together and is very impressed with them. They inform him of their intentions to play together as a group and that they have chosen the name of "The Eagles" for their group. Geffen immediately signs them to a contract and then books them in a month long performance at the Gallery Club in Aspen, CO. They perform 4 shows a day there using it as a means of rehearsing and to perform mostly self-penned compositions. In February 1972 "Linda Ronstadt" released her self-titled album on "Capitol" records. Glenn was the arranger of the album and also provided vocals and guitar work. The album peaked at #163 on the pop chart and went to #35 on the Country album chart. On 4 March the only single that the guys had recorded with Linda before leaving is released "Rock Me On The Water" backed by "Crazy Arms" that peaked at #85 on the singles chart.

Also in March "The Eagles" travel to the UK to record their debut album at the Olympic Studios in Barnes, London under the production of "Glyn Johns". On 1 June their debut self-titled album is released and peaks at #22 on the chart. It is quickly followed up by ""Take It Easy" with "Get You In The Mood" on the B-side from this album that debuts on 3 June. "Take It Easy" was co-written by both Frey and Browne and the single peaks at #12 on the US pop chart. On 9 September they release "Witchy Woman" backed by "Earlybird" also from their debut album. "Witchy Woman" was co-written by Bernie and Don and it goes to #9 on the US singles chart. On 7 November "John David Souther" releases his debut "J. D. Souther" on "Elektra". Frey has provided guitar work for most of the songs on this album but it fails to chart. On 14 November "The Eagles" make a 7-day tour of the UK. Upon returning to the U.S. on 24 November they appear at the Woodstock Of The West festival sponsored by KROQ radio station.

On 30 December they release their 3rd single from their debut album "Peaceful Easy Feeling" backed by "Trying" and it later peaks at #22. In February 1973 "Asylum" decides to re-release "Trying" again this time as an A-side cut with "Chug All Night" on the flip side also from the debut album but it fails to chart. In March they return to the UK to record their follow-up album and on the 16th they perform at Royal Festival Hall in London. Their second album "Desperado" is released on 17 April and it peaks at #41 on the chart. The title song from this album is never released as a single by "The Eagles" but is covered in years to come by "Clint Black", "The Carpenters", "Bonnie Raitt", "Johnny Rodriguez", "Linda Ronstadt" and many others. The first single from the "Desperado" album titled "Tequila Sunrise" backed up by "Twenty-One" debuts on the charts on 23 June. "Tequila Sunrise" co-written by Frey & Henley only manages to later peak at #64 on the US pop chart.

On 15 September "Outlaw Man" backed by "Certain Kind Of Fool" also from "Desperado" debuts and it peaks at #52 on the singles chart. In October "Jackson Browne" releases "For Everyman" on "Asylum" records. Glenn provided back-up vocals on this album and it peaks at #43 on the chart. On 3 November they return to the UK again for another 7-date only tour. They begin the tour at the Palace Theatre in Manchester, England on a card with "Neil Young with Crazy Horse". In December "David Blue" releases "Nice Baby & the Angel" on "Asylum". Glenn provides backing vocals on this album along with "David Lindley", "Dave Mason" and "Graham Nash" but the album does not chart. 1974 is a very busy year for Frey as far as guitar work, singing and song writing. In January "Don Felder" formally of "The Continentals", with "Stephen Stills", "Flow" for 3 years and then moving to Los Angeles to join "David Blue's" back-up band provides slide guitar work for the group working on their 3rd album.

"The Eagles" were so impressed with Felder's work that they invited him to join the group. During the recording of this 3rd album "Bill Szymczyk" takes over as producer from "Glyn Johns" at the recommendation of "Joe Walsh". Walsh had recently traveled with the band on their last UK tour and they all became good friends. On 6 April the new lineup perform together for the first time in public at the California Jam rock festival before a crowd of over 200,000 people. They performed at the Amphitheater on 27 - 29 May, 31 May and 1 June and every show was totally sold out. This concert was the beginning of a yearlong "Hell Freezes Over" tour.

At the start of this concert Glenn stated that "The Eagles' 14-year-old vacation has ended, we see this not as a reunion but a resumption". The concert was recorded for airing on MTV at a later date to celebrate the group's reunion after 15 years and was also made into a DVD. Appearing were Felder, Frey, Henley, Schmit and Walsh. The money then went to pay off Rios' medical bills and new prosthetic legs.

"Geffen" released the concert as a Video on 22 November. The tour finally resumes on 9 January 1995 at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, WA breaking the house record for attendance there. On 11 and 12 November and the 20th and 21st the group performs in front of sellout crowds at the Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan at the start of their "Hell Freezes Over World Tour". SOME "GLENN FREY" SONG LYRICS

THE HEAT IS ON
The heat is on, on the street
Inside your head on every beat
And the beat's so loud deep inside
The pressure's high just to stay alive
Cause the heat is on
Oh-wo-ho oh-wo-ho
Caught up in the action I've been looking out for you
Oh-wo-ho oh-wo-ho
Tell me can you feel it
Tell me can you feel it
Tell me can you feel it
The heat is on, the heat is on, the heat is on the heat is on
Oh it's on the street, the heat is on

Oh-wo-ho oh-wo-ho
Caught up in the action I've been looking out for you
Oh-wo-ho oh-wo-ho
Tell me can you feel it
Tell me can you feel it
Tell me can you feel it
The heat is on the heat is on the heat is on
Oh it's on the street, the heat is on

The shadows are on the darker side
Behind those doors it's a wilder ride
You can make a break you can win or lose
That's a chance you take when the heat's on you
When the heat is on

Oh-wo-ho oh-wo-ho
Caught up in the action I've been looking out for you
Oh-wo-ho oh-wo-ho
Tell me can you feel it
Tell me can you feel it
Tell me can you feel it
The heat is on the heat is on the heat is on

SMUGGLER'S BLUES
There's trouble on the streets tonight
I can feel it in my bones
I had a premonition
That he should not go alone
I knew the gun was loaded
But I didn't think he'd kill
Everything exploded
And the blood began to spill
So baby, here's your ticket
Put the suitcase in your hand
Here's a little money now
Do it just the way we planned
You be cool for twenty hours
And I'll pay you twenty grand
I'm sorry it went down like this
And someone had to lose
It's the nature of the business
It's the smuggler's blues
Smuggler's Blues

The sailors and pilots
The soldiers and the law
The payoffs and the rip-offs
And the things nobody saw
No matter if it's heroin, cocaine, or hash
You've got to carry weapons
Cause you always carry cash
There's lots of shady characters
Lots of dirty deals
Ev'ry name's an alias
In case somebody squeals
It's the lure of easy money
It's gotta very strong appeal

Perhaps you'd understand it better
Standin' in my shoes
It's the ultimate enticement
It's the smuggler's blues
Smuggler's blues

See it in the headlines
You hear it ev'ry day
They say they're gonna stop it
But it doesn't go away.
They move it through Miami, sell it in LA
They hide it up in tell u ride
I mean it's here to stay
It's propping up the governments in Columbia and Peru
You ask any D.E.A. man
He'll say there's nothin' we can do
From the office of the President
Right down to me and you, me and you

YOU BELONG TO THE CITY
The sun goes down
the night grows in

You can feel it starting all over again.
The moon comes up and the music calls
You're gettin' tired of staring at the same four walls.
You're out of your room and down on the street

Looking through the crowd in the midnight heat.
The traffic roars and the sirens scream

You look at the faces
it's just like a dream.
Nobody knows where you're going
nobody cares where you've been
'Cause you belong to the city
You belong to the night

Living in a river of darkness beneath the neon light
You were born in the city
concrete under your feet
It's in your moves
it's in your blood
You're a man of the streets.

When you said goodbye you were on the run
Tryin' to get away from the things you've done
Now you're back again and you're feeling strange

So much has happened and nothing has changed
Still don't know where you're going
You're still just a face in the crowd
You belong to the city

JAGUARDOG'S FINAL THOUGHTS

In 1990 Glenn was quoted in an interview in Rolling Stone magazine saying "Being from the Great Lakes and watching the sun set in the west, that's where I wanted to go." "Glenn Frey" is an outstanding multitalented music artist. He plays different instruments, he is a singer, an arranger, a composed, a producer and a leader. Glenn had 10 songs on the pop singles charts and "The Eagles" had 22 songs on the charts with 5 number 1 hits. Glenn had 3 albums on the charts all in the Top 40, "The Eagles" had 14 albums on the chart all but 3 made the Top 25 and 5 went to #1. They have 2 of the biggest selling albums of all time and have been breaking records for concerts and complete tours. Glenn put together a great group of guys who hopefully if they don't have any problems could be around for years selling out venues they appear at. They are one of the greatest groups to come out of the 1970's and definitely one of the greatest American bands of our time. Glenn and the groups' music is acerbic, amiable, atmospheric, autumnal, detached, earnest, good-natured, laid-back, melancholy, mellow, organic, plaintive, relaxing, rollicking, romantic, rousing, rowdy, searching, sentimental, smooth, soft and summery.

I owned every single by "The Eagles" that I could find at one time and almost had the entire collection. I also had all but 2 of their albums either on vinyl or on CD. I have always been a big fan of "The Eagles" as well as Glenn who I owned 4 singles by. I would say they are in the top tier of my all time favorite groups at maybe #6. Behind "The Beatles", "The Beach Boys", "The Monkees", "Paul Revere & The Raiders" and "Creedence Clearwater Revival". Well that's all I have for this week and I realize it was a very, very long one to read again so sorry for that. I hope my regular readers like the new format of lists in between information? This one took a lot out of me as it took 13 days of research, drafting and typing. I hope my next one is a lot easier to research and a lot shorter in length? I think I'm going to take the weekend off to rest and relax and begin researching my next posting on Monday. I may be covering "The Friends Of Distinction" if I can gather enough information on this group? As always thanks ever so much to everyone for dropping by, to read, rate and leave a comment if you have the time or inclination. I hope everyone has a Safe and Wonderful Weekend and God Bless You All! (It's SUPER BOWL Weekend in JACKSONVILLE!)

Oh and one more thing. Please, please feel free to point out any errors or mis-information here as I wish to be as accurate as I possibly can and thanks again!
