Beware of Scalding Liquids: Thermocafe Travel Mug

Written: Apr 07 '08 (Updated Apr 07 '08)
Pros:Keeps liquids hot & cold, Leak/spill proof, Unbreakable
Cons:Makes soda go flat
The Bottom Line: The best little travel mugs ever!

Hi, my name is Julie and I am a French Vanilla cappuccino addict. What I'm not fond of is a travel mug that doesn't keep my cappuccino hot or allows it to spill on me. I knew it was time to look for a new travel mug when the one I had wouldn't keep hot liquids even lukewarm during my 45 minute drive to work. Okay, the final straw was when the lid seam leaked fresh cappuccino onto me.

Looking High & Low
Who would have thought it was so hard to find the right travel mug. The ones I found were generally too large. It seems we've become a society of 32 ounce drinkers. Others wouldn't fit right in my truck's cup holder or just weren't what I wanted.

When I visited the hunting/sporting section of a local store the glint of the fluorescent lights on stainless steel caught my eye. There in a part of the store I had never thought to look for a mug was...well, my new mug. The Thermos Thermocafe Travel Mug Combo was exactly what I was looking for.

The unbreakable stainless steel exterior comes in handy since I'm not known for my grace. I've dropped my mug more than a few times. While there are some scratches on the exterior they are just cosmetic flaws. The double wall foam insulation keeps my cappuccino hot. I'm done with the 16 ounces each mug holds well before my drinks grow even lukewarm. I do have to remember to take little sips. I could swig the cappuccino from my old mug, the first time I used my Thermocafe mug I took a drink that scalded everything. You know...one of those drinks you take that you can track all the way to your stomach because it's burning everything along the way.

What I really like is that the mugs come in pairs. I fill them both on my morning commute then enjoy one during the drive and sip the other at work. The second usually lasts from an hour to two hours into the workday. The cappuccino is still very warm to hot when I finish the second cup. I do fill my mugs with hot water in the mornings, before I leave for work, to "pre-warm" them.

The screw on lid has a slide closure. It is a design that works very well at preventing leaks. Thank goodness as I just knocked it over (checking out the lid) next to my computer while writing this review. Not a drop was spilled. The slide lock moves easily, but takes a small amount of pressure to do so. The lid has a half inch lip all the way around it that helps prevents spills while drinking. It is a hard, black plastic as is the top 1 and 3/4 inches and the bottom 1/4 inch. There is a handle attached to the mug made of the same plastic.

The things I do for a review. I just tried to purposely break the handle off...can't do it. I should have known I couldn't break it since it is made by Thermos. I knew it was a good brand name. We've had a 2 quart Thermos for 3 years that pretty much can't be destroyed.

Now the bad...
When I'm not drinking cappuccino I'm sipping Diet Coke. The Thermos Thermocafe Travel Mugs make my soda flat. Yuck! But, I've found that most plastic cups do that and since the inside of the mug is the same plastic as the lid I expected it. My husband has used his for iced tea and the mug still had the ice cube he put in it when he was finished.

Overall
These mugs are what I was searching for. I've been so happy with my mugs, my husband bought a combo for him and his hunting buddy. They are both very satisfied with theirs. The mugs are almost indestructible, stylish, spill/leak proof, and they work. I bought the Thermos Thermocafe Travel Mug Combo for $10.00. I would have paid that much for one mug that works as well as they do!
