My husband has needed bifocals for a year now, but the excessive cost has been an issue. While he has been using reading glasses, he's not thrilled and constantly switching glasses. For television watching and driving he needs his normal glasses, but bifocals are needed for reading books, newspapers and his job when he is checking the specifications on his computer screen or printer.
My mother informed me of Zenni Optical. At my husband's last eye exam, he mentioned Zenni to the eye doctor when the doctor once again pushed a $250 pair of bifocals. With measurements in hand, I flipped open my laptop and started ordering.
First, the process is simple. Make sure you ask your eye doctor for the pupillary distance to make things easy. The form is easy to follow. Once you've picked you frame and frame color (prices start at $8), enter your right eye measurements, left eye measurements, axis measurements, pupillary distance and bifocal strength if needed. All of the numbers are on drop down menus, so you simply highlight the correct number.
You are then given options for no-line bifocals, extra strength prescriptions, shading for sunglasses if desired, anti-glare, etc. The drop-down menu format is used throughout, so there is no typing involved in this stage.
Once I'd finalized the prescription information, I clicked add to cart and it totals up your order. The no-line bifocals came to $32 total - a HUGE savings compared to the $220 that the eye clinic was charging.
At the same time, we ordered a second pair with gray tinting to be used solely as sunglasses while driving. This pair didn't have the bifocals added. For $12 he has a pair of prescription sunglasses that should last him a few years until his next exam.
So far, the quality of these glasses has been excellent. He's had no problems with the fit. His last pair of eyeglasses (from Costco) were forever loosening until the lens popped out and we spent tons of money driving back to the store to have that issue fixed.
I have family members who have been wearing the same pair of glasses for close to two years now and have never had a problem. My brother's had his pair for half a year and loves them.
All in all, the price was fantastic. It took a little over three weeks for delivery as we'd ordered bifocals. The company did clearly state that bifocals would take longer, so I expected it.
Shipping costs are a flat $4.95 regardless of the quantity ordered, so that's more than reasonable. I'll certainly be using Zenni for everything.
