Through A Looking Glass Darkly: My Perceptions Write-Off Entry

The Bottom Line Who perceives? What are 'you?'

The Write-Off appears at http://www.epinions.com/content_4259881092. Come on in, the water's fine.

1. How do you see yourself? When I look in an actual mirror, I see this guy I've been looking at for more than 34 years, and he's not a kid anymore. When I evaluate myself, I see a lot of love tempered with impatience; a man with the heart of a sensitive boy; a man whose integrity is important to him, and who keeps his promises - but constantly misplaces his keys or his glasses.

2. What do you believe to be society's perception of yourself? A funny thing that happens sometimes is that someone on the street or on a bus will misperceive that I am Jewish, and say something anti-Semitic. It's the strangest experience - sort of like reading somebody else's hate mail.

As a tall white male who 'talks like a professor' (as I've been told), I am often the recipient of the other side of prejudice: the so-called white privilege that opens doors with strangers that might be closed to someone who looks different.

How am I personally perceived, as far as I can tell? That's trickier. The feedback I get from people is that I'm a good listener, and have a face that invites them to talk. My sense of humor is often appreciated, but sometimes I can be cutting. People who have heard that I am a full-time, long-time meditator sometimes assume that I will be placid, dispassionate, maybe self-absorbed.

3. How do you think you will be remembered years after your death? What am I in the first place? A reflection in a pond. This will become more apparent when I'm a memory. It would be nice to think that people see a reflection of something nice in themselves when they think of me.

If you could have any sort of psychological/mental disorder or disease, what would it be? I don't know about that, but I once had a girlfriend who was sinesthetic - she experienced sound and language as if they were color. Well, to her they were color. It always fascinated me. I would write poetry and ask her about the colors.
