A late entry to the 2004 year in review

The Bottom Line So sorry I am late. How unlike me -- really.

I don’t often join write-offs. I don’t know why I chose this one. It is too late to join -- I missed the deadline, but I am busting in anyway and hopefully Dean will add me to the list. Anyway check it out here and the host (Dean Cowie) dbcint. Here is what he has say about his review, "As you might guess from the title, this Write-Off is about looking back at the year just past. Things you’ll always remember, things you wish you could forget. A series of questions regarding what you did, whether or not you enjoyed it, and all the other stuff that goes along with it. I’ll try not to make this too long or hard.”

#1: Name one person you met who you met throughout the year that has made a lasting impression on you. Tell us about them.

Mr. Heeb -- he is my son’s third grade teacher. Initially I didn’t like him because I disagreed with his teaching methods. However, my son (who is ADHD and is undergoing an evaluation for OCD) had been wonderful for my son. It saddens me to admit this, but sometimes mom doesn’t know best.

#2: Was there a TV show you saw for the first time in 2004 – perhaps 2004 was it’s first season – that you now absolutely love?

Sex in the City is hysterically funny. Not many shows make me laugh anymore, but this one does. I have even purchased seasons 1 and 2 on DVD. I would get the others, but they are pricey and I have a difficult time spending that much money on myself for something frivolous.

#3: Tell us about the best movie you saw last year. It doesn’t have to be one that was released last year, just as long as you saw it for the first time in 2004. If possible, include a link to your review of it.

Humor is a theme with me. There is so much sadness in everyday life that when I do watch tv or a movie, I want it to make me laugh. Therefore, Shark Tales has to be the one movie that I rates above all. It isn’t rolling on the floor funny, but it is suitable for the entire family and it does have its really funny moments. I didn’t write a review of this movie.

#4: How about the worst movie you saw last year? Is there one that sticks out a mile – perhaps you wrote a scathing review on it.

The worst movie that I saw was either Spider Man 2 or The Hulk. Both were worthless in my opinion, although my family would beg to differ on Spider Man 2 -- they loved it. I didn’t write reviews of either of those. Perhaps I should.

#5: Was there an event that you wish people would just shut up about already?

Michael Jackson. This man has gotten so much publicity. I am so sick of the whole thing. I wish they could just have the trial and then let us know the outcome. I swear if I see him on the news one more time I am going to throw up! I am just way over saturated with the whole Jackson clan -- and don’t get me started on the boob thing!

#6: Was there a worldwide event that left you wondering what the world is coming to?

The war in Iraq -- and politics in general. Again -- sickening.

#7: Similarly, was there a worldwide event that made you happy?

There wasn’t a world wide even that made me particularly happy. But there are events, like Kurt Warner, who doesn’t play for the St. Louis Rams any more, but still found time for Warner’s Warm-Ups -- a program to bring coats, etc., to St. Louis kids in need. Things like this make me happy and prove that there is good in people after all. There are many other things like this -- there is a local organization called Angels’ Arms that bought a huge house and has live in foster parents. The whole basis of the organization is to provide a safe, nurturing environment for sibling groups that are placed in foster care -- and allowing the sibling groups to stay together. That makes me happy.

#8: What were the best and worst albums you heard last year?

The worst is Autobiography by Ashlee Simpson. The best album -- and I was very surprised by it -- was by Trans Siberian Orchestra, The Lost Christmas. Even my children like this CD.

#9: Which musician / band disappointed you?

All most all of the country music singers my husband listens to. I think many are inconsistent with their music -- and I just don’t like how country music has evolved over the last ten years. I especially don’t like the sounds of the Dixie Chicks, Reba McIntire. (Please don’t leave me scathing comments about my choices in music. They are my choices and I don’t foist them on anyone.)

#10: Are there any writers who were newbies in 2004 that you highly recommend we read?

I have one: David Johansen. His Epinions.com ID is dpjohansen. You should check him out.

#11: What was the most significant event of the year? It could be local, international, or simply personal

My most significant personal event was that I was notified in late summer that the company I worked for was closing and everyone would be laid off. It was a job I loved and a company I loved. I was so sad. I was also so distraught because I didn’t know where I would find employment. It turned out to be a good thing for me, because I was working at a new employer even before the other company closed it doors (it was hard to work two full time jobs for a bit, but I enjoyed the money). I am in a supervisory position and have really found my niche.

#12: Do you think your life is on the right track for where you want to end up? How did 2004 affect this?

I totally changed gears over the course of the last year. I used to own and operate an in-home child care facility. I closed the doors in June and am now a program manager for developmentally disabled/mentally retarded adults. I don’t know that I am on the right track, but I really enjoy what I do.

#13: Was there anything else significant about 2004 you’d like to add?

It was an overall stressful year. I am glad it is over.
