ICQ - You seek something other than this
Written: Oct 07 '01
Pros:Easy to use, funny and noninvasive sounds.
Cons:Poor GUI, poor security, too much junk
The Bottom Line: ICQ - no thank you! Unfortunatly, Aol Instant Messenger is a better bet for you unless you like to spam and harrass people that is.
ICQ, I-Seek-You, in concept is a wonderful idea. Had it not been for those other knock of instant messengers this would be number 1.
First off, download and installing it. The website is totally cluttered with junk. ICQ by nature is an instant messenger, but its creators have given it a "cult" feel. After staring at the screen for a moment, I swear I was chanting "One of us, One of us." Once it was downloaded, I installed it and registered my handle. Registering was the only thing I really liked. I was able to pick a user name I wanted, not one with meaningless letters or number in it.
After it was installed I set out to find a friend. Another plus. The search catagories were an excellent change from other programs where I had to visit a slow web page and scroll through a list. But minutes after I had everything install things happened that turned me off from the program.
I was bombarded with spam, vulgar messages and requests for chats. Most of the spam was to visit pornographic web site and those chain love message sites, you know the ones that your grandmother sends you links to in your email. I was totally disgusted with the program after that and uninstalled it.
In the end I guess if my friends or family were avid users of this program I would have kept it and used it but since they're not and I avoid speaking to them anyway, I'd say junk it.
