Yea most of em' are sequels, but if they're as good as they're suppose to be, then I really don't mind them that much. Resident Evil Online has me intrigued the most right now, and I'm also looking forward to what Square plans to do with FFX-2.

So which is it, 4 or 8?! You've gotten me so confused! =)

I think I uncovered why you're having size problems: if you're playing 8" discs, then your PS2 is twice the size as everyone else's! You should trade it in for the standard size; the 4" discs are much easier to handle and take up less space...

Great update, you're still one of the best games writers around. I find it very interesting that all of the upcoming games you've listed are sequels in one way or another. For a long times I've thought of the PS2 as the 'sequel system', not only because of its name, but because most of the good games for it are sequels of other games. Interesting.

Well, I pretty much like all three equally, and I couldn't quite say that I have a favorite, but when it comes to the amount of favorite games on it, I'd say Gamecube. SOCOM for ps2 has me wrapped around its finger, and Splinter Cell on Xbox is also keeping me busy.

I wonder if Nintendo's or Microsoft's systems will last much longer (especialy Nintendo) at the rate Sony is selling PS2... Geez, Sony claimed 50 million units sold versus the GameCube's 10-11 million and the XBox's 8 million (9 million by June 2003 supposedly).

Rocky, I know you have all three system... do you actually have a favorite?

Well, let's look at most gamers. Occasionally, many people tell me that they hate XBox. I don't hear nearly as much hoopla from XBox as I hear from Sony or Nintendo. The truth is, PS2 and GC are in a tight race. On the one hand, Nintendo has been the grandfather of originality and wonder in video games, bringing us the best video game of all time: Ocarina of Time. On the other hand, Sony has taken the advantage of putting CD and DVD playing technology, and bringing it to the game system. So it's really anyone's guess. My personal overlook on it all is that Microsoft did not bode well in consoles, and Sony and Nintendo are just gonna be buckling heads until they are both outdated, like the PlayStation and N64 did. True in most cases, Sony is much more aggressive with their releases. After all, they heavily threatened Nintendo with the PS2. But I think that even with his recent downfall, Miyamoto will be able to bring GC back up with his regular magic. As far as recommendations go, I would suggest buying a GC.

I previously owned a PS2, for only about a month. Such a short time is because I had paid 300 dollars for something so overrated. The CD and DVD players have terrible and confusing controls, and the DVD to me looks just as good as any VCR. The last major problem with it is the portability factor. To me, the console seems kind of fragile, and too big. I strongly require a portability factor in a console, because I go to other people's houses all the time. All in all, I ended up selling it for 260$, and went and bought my GC. The XBox, as I said, I borrowed from a friend for a few days and I gladly sent it back. The controller is the number 1 factor in the XBox's problems. Even the new smaller controllers are cramping and the button layout is ridiculous. The console itself is huge, so I don't need to list my problem here. And lastly you can tell that the games that Microsoft is releasing are trash, as I have tried several XBox-only games. The GamCube is cheaper than both systems, and seems to be of much higher technical quality. It's portability factor is great, and it's controller is fantastic. Only problem here is the games, but like I said, I can name a lot more games that I like from the time I first bought my GC. So, personally I think GC and PS2 are just going to be pushing each other for a few years, until something newer comes out from both of em'.

heh its funny in 3 months your already wrong. The PS2 sold roughly 1.1 million units in ALL of 2001. Now, the gamecube sold around 450,000 in 7 months, and the X-BOX which will suprise you, Launched october, and ended 2001 with 997,000 Units sold. Gee, Sony had 9 more months and only sold 103,000 more units? Laughable, as is the company is lowering their 2002 early expectations for their PS2. SO far the X-Box has beaten them in every category, and microsoft has not failed to produce games that appeal to all ages, so there goes yer BS "Adults Only" theory right down the toilet. I own a PS2 and I really enojoy it, but, to be realistic with you, its way behind the X-Box, and the X is what The PS2 Should be. I feel for sony now, they are going to struggle in 2002, and by them lowering their estimations for sales for 2002 already, its sent them to the chopping block according to wall street. Plain and simple, the Ps2 is aging technology, and im not bashing sony, but for 299$ they are crazy if you think someone is going to buy their console over the WAY more powerful X-Box.

I think PlayStation 2 will beat GameCube and Xbox easily. Firstly, the Cube will be available with only support from Nintendo with child-like games (about half the customer range) only aided by third-parties like Capcom who are doing the Resident Evil thing again. Also GC cost in excess of £400 (£560) as I saw one today in a Computer fair. And the PS2 is going for £200 today in all stores.
Next the Xbox. Xbox has all the credentials a avid gameplayer like myself wants, great hardware, great LOOKING software. However Microsoft has had their hand at PC games fairly SERIOUSLY. So I believe that only the real hardcore gamers who want real graphics will buy it – despite the dull gameplay. As long as they can afford it. As it includes a Pentium III this means it will cost about £500, and then there are the games. Only third parties will aid Xbox and GC as their core manufacturer have their own abilities with a particular share in the industry as I mentioned: Nintendo KIDS, Microsoft ADULTS.

Plus MS have the reputation of being “rip-offs”, an argument I don’t agree with, that makes it less popular. The PlayStation 2 has been out over two years next March and has sold roughly millions of machines. Not to mention the advance in graphics and gameplay thanks to Sony’s foundation second party Polyphony for Gran Turismo 3 and Konami in the soon-to-be released Metal Gear Solid Sons Of Liberty. Then there are the third parties which have been for the most part successful, Red Faction, SSX, among others.

In the price category alone PS2 has it subsequently tied up, at £200 it seems fair. When you see what happened when Nintendo launched N64 they failed due to their obvious child-in-mind-logic. And again they’ve failed to make a drastic effort in the market again with GC. Microsoft, renowned for their Train Simulator, will also fail because of their lack of fun and basic reputation aforementioned.

That’s what I think. GC will die after the kiddie rush has ended, and Xbox soon later because of the lake of fun games, PlayStation 2 however will be already owned throughout the world as it almost is now.

Agree? Disagree? My opinion may be argued.

It is going to be a heated battle between Microsoft and Nintendo.

The GameCube, despite its appearance (there will be a black one at launch for you finicky folk), is going to actually have a great library of games for us older folks (Eternal Darkness anyone?). I played an import of this and it is more than it promises to be.

XBox is also going to have some top quality games, Halo (only the most anticipated PC game for God knows how long) being one of them. It also has huge potential with the built in hard drive, eliminating the additional $35 for a memory card. That and the upcoming Project Ego is looking nice. I'll be playing this thing on the 24th (and may come home early with a final console that day if I'm lucky enough).

PS2 is turning into the "other" system, the one with ports, hurried games, and general trash. Sure, they have MGS2 (but Microsoft now own the MGS series) and FF 10 (11 will be the last one on the system) and there may not be any more Gran Turismos since they are unwilling to add realistic damage.

#1 and #2 - Shared by XBox and GameCube at this time, and will be a constant tug of war.

#3 PlayStation 2 - It'll be #1 for the next 6 months in raw consoles, but that will be changed very fast since Microsoft and Nintendo are able to churn out more units than Sony can. Also, even current games can't match up to the launch titles of the other two. Sony is lucky they don't rely on the console industry.

Also, where did you get $500 for the XBox? That is just for advanced pre-orders. They will be selling the unit solo for $299 on October 15th (if you can find it).

The PS2 will still remain on the top of the console war. X-box will give it a challenge depending upon the games it releases with the system, but it's microsoft. Nintendo is still going to be the weak one because it doesn't provide a wide variety of games, it also didn't due well in Japan. PS2 is the only that will have Final Fantasy 10, the other systems can't compare

I agree that even though Nintendo has had a bad reputation for being for little "kiddies" only, that the Game Cube will change all that. Of course, Nintendo is for kids of all ages, so of course there are going to be some kiddy games, but there are also more mature games coming out like PSO, Eternal Darkness, and the Resident Evil series which is now exclusive to Nintendo.

So Nintendo is my top choice along with yours.

Which Console? (Reply to this comment)
by yarrick
I think it really is a race between Gamecube and PS2. I have heard that Xbox is getting bad hype because it's done by Microsoft. I think that Xbox could overcome this hype if the games are good enough.

For the Gamecube it has a really good shot as long as Nintendo releases more games for the older audience. A lot of gamers grew up on Nintendo such as myself but Nintendo is focusing more on a younger audience and I think this needs to change if Nintendo wants to be #1.

PS2 has a great shot with a huge amount of games thanks to the backwards capability. Also Sony has alot of games that focus on that older audience I was talking about before. With Final Fantasy X coming out I think the PS2 has a great shot.

So after all this what console do I pick. I think this a tough coice with both Xbox and Gamecube still unavailable in the US, but if I had to make a guess I would go with old reliable Nintendo with it's Gamecube. Close decision but Nintendo edges out Sony in my opinion.
