Chateau St. Jean Fumé Blanc, La Petite Étoile Vineyard, Russian River Valley, 2002

Ummm, errr... a tad over-oaked and slightly yeast heavy for my taste. Creamy and rich... I would have preferred something more acidic and bone dry. Pretty good, though.

That great shyster, oh wait, I mean marketing genius, Mondavi, figured out how to take a good wine, ruin it, and sell more of it under a dubious trade name than the original..."smoked white?"

I've had CSJ Fumé Blanc but not from the same appelation...I don't remember exactly what it was, although for some reason I recall purchasing it at Albertson's. It was a bit too oaky but wasn't as yeasty as the wine you describe. Compared to the sins committed against chardonnay, some of which seems to have more terpene in it than retsina, it's saintly, but I share your preference for cleaner sauvignon blanc.

Saying "cleaner sauvignon blanc", though, reminds me of the Charles Shaw offering, which tasted like floor cleaner...but anyway, I'll have to try the Buena Vista. I very recently visited Napa and Livermore and was quite pleased with Beringer's "Leaning Oak" Sauvignon Blanc--I almost regret having sent the two bottles I bought to relatives. If their "Napa Valley" labeling is the same wine--and I suspect that it is--you might want to give it a try if you haven't already.

...been way too long since I have been able to read one of your reviews.

I think of you now and then when we try a new wine- org is usually what it is, but we found some real winners in the last few years.

Great to see you are still here.

I'm not a big fan of CSJ; if you like their usual product and think this is too oaky, well, I think I'll stay away--everything I've had has been to oaky and buttery for my money.
