over way too soon. I never realized how much you are into music. (Have I been gone , or what?)
Enjoyed the reading! Hope it won't take me so long to read the NEXT one. Jude

attack of the invisible things (Reply to this comment)

Fascinasting piece. I find it curious that the emcees i hadn't heard of - Bahamadia, Lady of Rage, Mia X - are exactly the ones i'd most expect (from your description) to enjoy albums by. The high-literacy segment of the rap movement, socially progressive in most ways, is dominated (at least in press coverage) by men ... and _i'd never noticed_. Time to fix that.
cheers,
- Brian

What a coincidence... (Reply to this comment)

that I was spinning Dirty Harriet as I stumbled upon this essay. Great job in depicting the history of the female emcee. Such a shame half of the women on your list are M.I.A. Excellent job.

Excellent review. It was great how you described the impact the older generation of female emcees had on the new ones. It's sad to think that even in 2005 most female emcees still can't (or won't) rhyme, especially considering how many skilled spoken word artists are out there. Nice.
