"Strawberry Shortcake: The Berry Best Friends' Picnic" is a Station Stop 1 book in the All Aboard Reading series.
Synopsis:
Strawberry Shortcake and her friends decide to have a picnic, so each heads home to prepare something to eat. Strawberry Shortcake can't make her -- you guessed it -- strawberry shortcake, because she doesn't have any flour. Luckily, Angel Cake has some for her.
Angel Cake, however, has a problem of her own. She doesn't have any butter to make her frosting, but is able to get some from Ginger Snap.
One by one, each of the friends gets to share an ingredient with another. In the end, they all sit down together for the "berry best picnic ever."
My Thoughts:
This is a cute book about sharing and working together. As it's meant for early readers, the story is told in the present tense, with only a few lines of text in large print per page.
The All Aboard Reading Series is divided into the following levels:
Station Stop 1 - Beginning to Read
Station Stop 2 - Reading with Help
Station Stop 3 - Reading Alone
I find that the Station Stop 1 books are slightly more advanced than most Level 1 readers. This book has a number of compound words, such as everyone, Pupcake and Huckleberry. Some of the shorter words also require slightly more advanced phonics skills, such as cream, flour, sugar, Ginger and fruit.
The characters in this book are Strawberry Shortcake, Huckleberry Pie, Angel Cake and Ginger Snap. Strawberry Shortcake has short red hair and brown eyes. Ginger snap has medium skin, brown eyes and straight bluish-black hair. Angel Cake has light skin, blue eyes and blond hair. Orange Blossom has dark skin, brown eyes and dark brown, curly hair. Huckleberry Pie has brown hair and brown eyes. Although he's included in this story, I don't think Huck's enough to make this, or any of the Strawberry Shortcake books, acceptable to boys. They are definitely aimed at the female audience.
The two pets who appear in this story are Custard, the pink cat, and Pupcake, the blue and white dog.
The illustrations are bright and colorful. As the friends pass from house to house in search of ingredients, the background colors change depending on whose house they're in.
This story has a simple plot, without any suspense that could scare a young child.
Written by Jackie Glassman and illustrated by Ken Edwards and Gita Lloyd. The cover is illustrated by Lisa Workman.
