Palmetto Pale Ale: Herbal American Pale Ale

The Bottom Line This beer offers a good amount of complexity and it kept my interest throughout the drinking experience.

During my beer travels, I often get a chance to sample some products that I could not otherwise try due to their limited availability. Often, some flavorful products are discovered that could easily sell on a larger scale with the right amount of promotion. One such beer product I sampled for the first time on a recent travel excursion is Palmetto Pale Ale, a beer brewed by the Palmetto Brewing Company, located in Charleston, South Carolina. Let’s see how this beer stacks up:

Basic Characteristics of This Beer:

Poured into a glass, this beer is orange/copper in color with an aroma that is floral, piney, and enticing. The foam level of this beer is average, and the carbonation is light.

This American pale ale tastes a little different from many of its close competitors. The taste combines toasted malt with just a slight amount of chocolate and the finish of herbal hops. There isn’t much fruit flavor present, but there is some and it adds to the beer’s complexity and enjoyment.

Brewed year round, this beer has a crisp, biscuit- like taste and a pleasant aftertaste. The earthy hops and touch of caramel give it an interesting flavor. It has many characteristics that make it seem like a meal.

Food Compatibility:

This beer would match up nicely with beef roast, lamb, turkey, and other hearty meats. The herbal taste, however, makes this ale a little bit limited in what it matches with. For this reason, many will probably prefer to drink it all by itself.

Final Thoughts:

Palmetto Pale Ale is a product I had the opportunity to purchase and sample for the first time following a trip to South Carolina. I had heard about this brewery before, but never had a chance to try its products until I found myself in the beer isle of a Myrtle Beach grocery store.

Unlike some American Pale Ale, this one isn’t quite as fruity as I expected. There is some fruit taste, but it is buried beneath the other flavors present. I could only detect a small amount of citrus flavor in this beer and while this was different, it was also a pleasant change from the emphasis on citrus flavor so common in many American pale ale products.

If there is one thing that could make some people like this beer a little less than they otherwise would it is the herbal hop flavor present. This herb taste gives the beer a somewhat medicinal character and for some beer drinkers, this will be a definite turn- off. Myself, I found it unusual and different, but it didn’t necessarily turn me against the beer. Again, I found this to be a pleasant change from what I’m used to in an American Pale Ale.

One thing that needs to be noted about Palmetto Brewing Company is its lack of a real presence in the craft- brewing world. I have heard of this brewery before, but only in name. I had never seen an advertisement or read an article about this company. And when I searched the internet for a web site, I was not able to find one. For a brewery that has been around for a while, Palmetto really needs to do a better job promoting itself. This and other products in the Palmetto lineup would likely sell quite well if only more people knew about them. For a bottler to go this long without even establishing a web site is inexcusable.

Overall, I enjoyed my drinking experience with Palmetto Pale Ale. I’m going to rate this beer 4 out of 5 stars. Like I said, the herbal flavor will not be to everyone’s liking. But if you’re tired of the “usual” flavor of the more popular American pale ale, then you will enjoy Palmetto’s take on this style. It offers some good complexity with a taste that is chewy and satisfying.
