| vmadwop1's Full Review: Louis L'Amour - Trouble Shooter: A Hopalong Cassid... |
I found the book Trouble Shooter at my local library. I was first attracted to the book by the Author's name, I have read many books by Louis L'Amour and always liked them.
On the jacket there is a picture of a cowboy laying in a prone position with his head raised and pointing to a pistol. He is laying in low grass and it appears to be sunset by the coloring of the sky. The writing in white across the top says, "Hopalong Cassidy Novel," and just below in bold print, "Louis L'Amour," Trouble Shooter. This is a hard cover book by Bantam. The book itself is white with a blue wrapper 1 1/4 inches around it.
I love this story it is very exciting. I did not get bored with this book. It started out very exciting and stayed like that till the end. The story is of the old west and includes the stealing of an entire ranch. There are holdups, rustling of cattle and murder.
As the story begins a man is walking around on the range looking at the ground for something, Another man is laying in the grass with a rifle about to shoot him. A shot rings out,the man with the rifle is wounded and escapes. The shot was fired by Hopalong Cassidy who introduced himself to the other man, Rig Taylor as Cameron. After talking four awhile Hopelong learns that Taylor works for a woman Cindy Blair who inherited a ranch from Pete Melford. Pete was a fellow cow puncher of Hopalong's who had sent a message to Hopalong that he had trouble.
Only thing is Hopalong was on the trail and didn't get the message until three years later. The man with the rifle trying to kill Rig Taylor had been Tate Brown. Brown a hired killer was sent an unsigned note telling him what to do and where to find the five hundred dollars for the job.
Rig Taylor and Cindy Blair had directions to the ranch but there was no ranch to be found. As Hopalong (Cameron) was talking to Taylor a group of cow hands from the Box T ranch rode up and said they were trespassing and told them to get off this range. The Box T ranch belongs to a man know as Colnol Treadway, who also owns much off the town Katrina.
Hopalong (using the name Cameron) meets Cindy Blair in Katrina and decided to work for Treadway on contract to get cattle out of the bush country. They agree on the price of one dollar a head but Cassidy has to get five hundred head out to get paid.
Cassidy meets a man, Pike Towne in a covered wagon outside Katrina and who says he is on his way to Oregon and needs money. Along with Towne is his wife Sarah and dog Ship. The dog is trained to herd cattle. Cassidy hires Pike Town to help get the cattle out of the bush with the help of the dog.
Cassidy, Pike Towne and Sarah make a camp At Picket Fork near the bush country. Then they set up a corral where it can be seen and another corral just inside the bush hidden from view. The second corral is to be used to hide most of the cattle as Hopalong and Pike don't trust Treadway.
The bush country is made up of thousands of acres of black chaparral, dense thickets of mesquite and all sorts of sharp spiny cactus. The cattle are wild, the older ones are aggressive and hard to handle.
Left with these circumstances this makes one exciting story. It will make you keep reading to find out what happens next. It is a good story that tells about rustlers, theft and murder. It makes me feel like I'm in the book watching these colorful characters.
My final thoughts are I love Louis L'Amour and his book Trouble Shooter. I would recommend for any person who likes westerns. Hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.
