IrishMa4's Full Review: Danielle Steel - Safe Harbour
Everybody reads Danielle Steel is the motto on all of her books. Its true. Did you know that grief counselors recommend her books to their clients? Many of her books deal with death and moving on. She has written so many books that if you are a regular reader they become predictable and thus not as gripping and spellbinding as some, because you know what is going to happen next. Her books are ones you can put down even for a day or two and not be dying to know what happens next.
Safe Harbour is such a book. Its about a young girl named Pip, her mother Ophelie, their dog Moose, and a man named Matt. There is also the fried Andrea and her baby William. Those are the main characters throughout the book.
Pip and Ophelie are at the beach for the summer to get away from the memories that haunt them in their home. Opehlies husband and son were killed in a plane crash. Its a bit frustrating because you dont learn that for a few chapters. I kept rereading thinking I must have skipped a paragraph somewhere telling me why Ted and Chad were not with them at the beach and what happened to them. Its hinted that something happened but you have to wait awhile to find out what it is.
Pip is wandering down the beach one day and finds Matt painting. Being a budding artist herself she watches Matt for a while and a friendship is forged. Not only do they become friends, but teacher and student as well. That is the best part of this book. Reading about Pip and Moose (her dog that used to be Chads and has now adopted her) and her growing friendship with Matt.
The minute I read about Pip and Matt meeting on the beach I knew he would end up with Ophelie. I knew there would be problems to overcome along the way before they ended up. Thats the curse of reading Danielle Steel books you know whats going to happen because basically the same thing happens in every book just different characters and different tragedies to overcome. But overcome them they do and happily ever after is how it ends.
Theres a lot less dialog in Steels books than in most books. Youll read lots of thoughts and background and description. I like that. I havent traveled a lot and enjoy reading about other parts of the country. This story is taking place in Safe Harbour and San Francisco. Sounds like a beautiful part of California from what is written in the book.
I think one of the main messages this book sends is that family is not always blood and memories arent always true after the death of someone you love.
Despite being so predictable and some hard subjects (death, betrayal, Bi-Polar) its a good read and leaves with you with a good feeling. Pip is such a joy you can just feel it and see her as you read. Ophelie is so strong yet so frail you just want to wrap your arms around her. Matt makes you smile.
If you havent read Safe Harbour I suggest you add it to your suitcase over your summer vacation. Its a good read. And after all, every body reads Danielle Steel.
