| pablothegreat's Full Review: Nora Archibald Smith - A Dinosaur Lives in My Hous... |
My daughter loves dinosaurs and, as most children, is very interested in learning more about dinosaurs. So many friends and family members pick up books about dinosaurs for her. This is just one of the 1,265,120 dinosaur books we have. I am kidding....I think! We have many, many dinosaur books with a shelf devoted to only dinosaur books, fiction and nonfiction!
By looking at this little book, you would think it was for toddlers but it is not a board book! We meet a little boy holding his toy dinosaur and he says "Watch out! There's a dinosaur in my house." There is one difference in this dinosaur though...it is magical! This dinosaur is commanded by the boy and can change at a moment's notice into any type of dinosaur that the boy wants! He wants huge eggs in the morning, the dinosaur turns into an Oviraptor. This illustration has a wiry green dinosaur balancing an egg on his nose and the boy is eating breakfast. He turns the dinosaur into a Supersaurus, this picture shows him with a measuring tape.
When he wants to race the tiniest dinosaur, he changes the dinosaur into a Mussaurus. Here we see the boy outrunning a very tiny dinosaur. The boy wants to slide down a very tall slide? The dinosaur is now a Diplodocus with a long long neck. This picture has a mouse, cat, and boy sliding down the tall dinosaur's neck. The toy dinosaur is changed into a Triceratops when he wants to play "ring toss". Here we see him throwing rings around the dinosaur's horns. A friendly looking Stegosaurus lets him climb all over his back. An anatosaurus dinosaur "shovels up plants from the bottom of a pond" for him. An Ichthyosaurus dives deep into the water with the boy. This dinosaur in the picture looks like a large dolphin. A bully comes around and the dinosaur is changed into a Tyrannosaurus Rex. This picture has the dinosaur looking huge and fierce to frighten the bully. When the boy wants a banana from the top of a tree, he changes the dinosaur into a Brontosaurus. This picture shows the boy being lifted up to a bunch of bananas in a tree by the tall dinosaur. An Ankylosaurus with it's knotty tail would be great for tearing down obstacles in the way. Only a Pteranodon dinosaur could lift the boy to the clouds and fly over houses. Last but not least, the boy can change the dinosaur into a "Pillosaurus". The last illustration show the boy sleeping with his head on the toy dinosaur.
This is a lovely book for children. I did not expect much out of a smaller book but this one has a good bit of text, lengthy, and even has the names and cartoon pictures of real dinosaurs! The color cartoon illustrations are mainly the boy and the dinosaur with his cat and mouse in some pictures. Most are on a solid pastel color background but some have different locations such as a pond. Even though simple, the pictures do show accurate representations for the dinosaurs. (Of course in reality, I doubt they all would have been smiling or making other facial expressions like in the book!) There is a paragraph of text on every other page and the pictures take up both pages. We loved the storyline and the pictures were fantastic to go along with the story. So not only is this an imaginative book for children ages 2 to 8 years old but also a bit educational!
