Oh how wonderful! That you got to meet her...something I always longed to do. I had one missed opportunity many years ago, and still regret it. Her books have been so formative in my life: I truly love them. That's one reason this one felt like such a gift, though the writing was clearly still very "young" writing.
I did write her some letters during my teens and twenties, which she graciously answered. She was not only a gifted artist, but a truly fine human being. Thanks so much for sharing your memories!

I met this great lady when I was ten. I'd written a report on her as my favorite author. She came to my church to speak and my mother trotted me up to her and said "Susan just wrote a book report on you." I was mortified and SHE was very very tall.
I loved everything I ever read by her. It was all good.
