My Body Lies Over the Ocean, written by J. S. Borthwick,
is the latest addition to her New England cozy series
starring Sarah Dean (college english teacher) and her
almost new husband Alex (a physician). Sarah is always
getting involved in convoluted and mysterious murders
because of her inquisitive, intelligent and impulsive
nature and she drags her nearest and dearest with her.
In this novel, she, Alex and her curmudgeonly aunt
are taking a cruise from europe back to Maine on the maiden
voyage of a large passenger ship. Strange occurences
begin almost immediately and the text holds your
attention until you discover how flimsy and unbelievable
the plot line is. The story erodes into an unfunny
French farce with people disappearing, popping
back up and doing bizarre things all the while. This
is not one of her better offerings, it is average for
many writers but way below par for Ms. Borthwick. Instead
I would suggest reading one of her earlier books, ie.
The Bridled Groom or Dolly is Dead.
