The Essence of Hip Hop
The Definition of Hip hop:
1: A popular urban youth culture, closely associated with rap music and with the style and fashions of African-American inner-city residents.
2: Rap music.
Adj: Of or characteristic of hip-hop culture.
This definition is a general description, that is pretty stereotypic and behind the times. Hip Hop has evolved from the 'inner city residents" to become an accepted form of music internationally. From the British Roots Manuva, to the Canadian K-OS, to the Beastie boys, all the way back to Rakim rhyming of Eric B's frantic scratching, sizzling old school cuts.
Hip-hop is worldwide, taking the shape in more different forms. You have gangsta rap, an innovative controversial style created by NWA back in the late 80's. Kurtis Blow goes even way back, while most heads find the real definition of the original hip-hop through Eric B and Rakim, the BDP and Public Enemy. This was the beginning of the prime time of hip-hop back in 1988. The lyrics were original, the DJing was spectacular, and the music was getting respect for being Fresh and entertaining yet true to the people. Run DMC was the first to ride hip-hop's success commercially. Everyone can still Remember the top hats, huge thick chains and of course the Adidas.
Hip-hop truly hit its pick in the early 90's with the innovative style of G Funk. Dre created a whole new form of music, which helped The Chronic, and Doggystyle excelled beyond belief. The East had their own thing with hardcore production and raps from Wu Tang, 2pac, and Nas, just to name a few. This was the time when Nas dropped Illmatic, Wu Tang unleashed the 36 chambers and Biggie prophesied his own demise. Hip Hop soon blew even larger on an international level with the 2pac and Biggie beef, and new polished sound. The year of 1997 was the tragic final year of this musical time, as hip-hop died out with 2 of it's most influential Icons, 2pac and the Notorious BIG. Times have changed, and the music will never be the same, corporate America took complete control of this "inner-city music" making millions off of the culture.
Now time for an uncensored, unfocused and very ignorant rant:
Congratulations to Common Sense and Nasir Jones joining the very narrow 5* club. Both respected Emcee's released their 5th great album with the unreleased Be (I will still buy it, but I can't wait no month and a half) and Street Disciple. They truly reached the elevated level of the music that few will ever grace their presence.
PS (Post Script): Street Disciple was a classic effort. You people need to open your eyes and see the light, because Nas had a 6th sense to create great music with that epic double disk. Look out for Nasdaq Jones, which is to be released this summer (Knowing Nas it will be out in 2007.)
O.C is still alive creating underrated music, as I heard the promo for Starchild. His next album is another LP you should look into investing in. Look out for Canadian rappers Rikoshay and DL Incognito who are top prospects. Rikoshay has 2 quiet songs circling around the indie market with Stomp and One By One. DL Incarnito has had his some-what radio played single Proof, lead of his album Life's a collection of experience, which was nominated for an Emmy. Give this one a listen because his traditional old school orientated music is pleasing music.
Flip the script to the Bullsh*t with Southern Crunk Music. I hate the San Antonio Spurs (Lakers!) I hate the southern state powers and now I hate their music. Little John tinkles the same beat, and millions of dumb-a*ss' help it sell off the charts. I rather watch the WNBA, instead of listening to that trash. Give me some 50-cent please, cause at least he has some solid production. This Crunk music makes G Unit look like a fabulous group, it's that intolerable. I could pick up a bunch of multi-syllable words from my thesaurus, but I'll just say; F*ck Little John, pop star Chingy and the Crunk Music as a whole.
Eminem is a sell-out, but there is one last glimpse of talent on Shady Aftermath with the Game. The documentary was a very enjoyable album, which could of been even better if they cut out some drizzle and added a little more flavor. Hearing some of the best production in years, we received the best Mainstream album since Dre 2001. Beanie Sigel is ROC's Game, releasing the B Coming. He really surprised me drastically improving his lyricism and themes, with this reflective album before being facing federal time.
50 Cent continues to slur through idiotic, sleep inducing, nerves tingling diss' too a growing list of enemies. 50's/Games beef did not end. Mark my words, Dre explained to them all the money they could be compromising, and after counting on fingers by ones for 50's uneducated mind, the beef ended prematurely like Britney Spears acting career. G Unit affiliated underground prospect, Saigon will be expecting to blow with The Greatest Story Never told. If he remains focused, with his potential it can be a great release.
Canibus decided not to end his career with "The Album made in hell's kitchen" and will follow with 2 released. Mind Control is due June 21st, while Hip-hop for sale may see a late 2005 release. Prodigy will release HNIC 2, which will be mediocre at best like any post 1002 Mobb release. Cormega will drop the deviating Urban Legend, late 2005 or early 2006. Look out for this, it has Bdog's sticker of most anticipated album, this will be epic and crush all the doubts of this man's poetic ability. Look for many new releases this year, which should please the underground crowd. With the quality releases thus far, this year will easily surpass' last years disappointments. Jay Z is bound to return any day, because that industry Sl*t cannot get enough revenue. Soon he will be pimping Memphis Bleek around the way, because we know his last album went Wood. The ROC is terrible save Kanye West, who proved he is an instrumental god with Be, and the incarcerated Beanie Sigel.
Much respect for all the true Epinion colonists such as Madtheory, Aesopfable, the obnoxious Big D, kurupted Paulyoungotti, swytchblade, the carnage, mcheadcase, andrewstarr, snogan86, rsz15, afterburn, cryticcradle and all the others I am too lazy to type. I also want to show respect to Nas, Cormega, Common, Rakim, KRS One, Ras Kass, Canibus, 2pac, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Black Star, Wu Tang, The Roots and every single individual helping to preserve the music. And to everyone supporting pure hip hop!
Much hate out to all southern Crunk Music, especially little John, the unbelievably wack Chingy, Stuttering GGGGG Unit, especially 50, 95 % present of the artist on 106 & Park, every individual who makes music solely for profit and not moral issues. If you want to make Club music, make it from the heart, stop milking the average American idiot for his 12.00 $ piece of plastic, and everyone who hates hip-hop, or my personal viewpoints.
Im Rick James B*tch. BDog is signing off of epinions with this final article. This is not an offical resignation so a return is not out of the picture.
