Homosexuality, Religion, and Marriage: A Dialogue

The Bottom Line ...

Inspired by the diversity of opinion and general eloquence of the majority of authors on both sides of the fence in the recent Abortion W/O, I decided to tackle another issue in sore need of constructive dialogue: gay marriage.

This is in no way intended to be a debate, nor an attempt to judge or pass judgement on either side of the issue. Because, honestly, when it comes down to that (as it almost always does), true conversation and honest dialogue cease to exist, lost in a heap of rhetorical rants and bulletpoint soundbytes. In the end, absolutely no one benefits from that, no one learns and the gaps between us grow ever more tense, ever more polarized. Rather, I intend this to be the place for a legitimate, open, real conversation about the issue, a place where you are given a chance to add your voice and be truly heard no matter what your opinion of the matter.

So, whether you are staunchly liberal, fiercely conservative, fundamentalist or atheist, activist or slacker, I hope you will participate. The topic of homosexuality hits so many different societal cross-sections (politics, love, religion, marriage, culture) that if we are to truly come to any sort of understanding of either side of the argument, we need to have as many voices heard as possible. Again, let me stress that I intend to set this write-off up in a safe and constructive way, creating space for honesty while not opening the doors to derisive attacks from either side.

I want to know if the talented, intelligent, diverse group of people that make up Epinions can pull this off. If you are in any way interested in participating in such a challenge (and an open, honest dialogue is one of the more difficult things to ever ask of any diverse group), leave a comment in the comments section. I have a few ideas for basic questions and format, but I would also love to hear other voices while attempting to officially shape this thing. If you have any ideas for possible questions or areas you'd like to see covered in the set-up, please let me know in the comment section as well.

I think this can work.

I hope you sign up.
