Not what they used to be

Pros:Cheap
Cons:500 Error after you have passed 30 days - charging for closed accounts!
The Bottom Line: For simple html only sites, Addr may work - for scripts choose someone else. Beware of phantom charges!

Edited to add latest problem; a $104 charge on my credit card for an account closed last year. So far a check has been "mailed" three times in the last three months but I have no recieved my money and can no longer get through to customer support. Bad service is one thing, ripping people off is something entirely different!

I have been using Addr for about two and a half years and was always happy with their service. In fact I first moved to their service because they offered Perl 5 support for a great price. Since the sites I run Perl on do not produce much income, this was important to me. So for quite a while things ran smoothly. I have opened about 20 different accounts with them and had no problems until the last few months, and it's all been down hill from here. I first noticed they updated their web site to a much fancier and professional interface. I thought this was great because I had recommeded them countless times and their last one was very unprofessional. Within a week of that update things started going wrong so I don't know if they switched management, or were bought out but something changed.
I opened a new account expecting their normal instant set up - this didn't happen. In fact it took almost two weeks for me to get access to the site. I emailed customer support countless times and kept getting the same response. "We are having server problems, your account will be open tomorrow". When you're dealing with a client it is very hard to explain why you can't get their website up in the promised 24 hours, Addr did nothing to explain or correct the problem, in fact they kept the 2 weeks worth of payment for the site that wasn't there. This was just the start.
About that same time someone I had recommended Addr to started emailing me for help, the simple script they were trying to run was giving them 500 errors. After checking all the CHMOD settings she finally gave up, moved servers and lost the money she had paid Addr.
Two days later, my biggest site that is running a Top 50 contest was giving 500 errors. After spending an hour on the phone with support (support is a long distance number) I finally gave up and reinstalled the program. This corrected the problem and I was able to do so without losing data. This script had worked for nearly two years. Why had it just quit working out of the blue? Support said nothing had changed on their end, but obviously it did.
Three days later another site crashed, this time it was a site running the journaling software "Greymatter". After reinstalling and checking all the settings it would still not work. This program had been working for 4 months with no problems. At this point I was forced to switch servers and lost all the previous data. Unfortunately I had paid for a year in advance at Addr, and because it was past the 30 day time period they would not reimburse my money. Of course, it all worked during the 30 day period.
So it appears that things work for a while, generally 30 days before they crash. I know of four other people going through the exact same scenario, on top of my 3 sites that crashed. Addr seems to only be stable if you are running very simple sites, html only. If you are going to run any scripts, I would choose another host. I am still looking for that reliable, affordable host. Addr was just that for the last two years, but no more.
