| three_ster's Full Review: Sex and the City |
Four years after the hit television show Sex And The City ended its run, the theatrical release has finally made its way to theaters. As soon as the show ended, fans were clamouring for information about a possible film, but it never seemed like the four stars of the show could agree on a script (or probably salaries too) in order to get this thing finished. In fact, there were times when one of the women said she would never do a film, having closed that chapter of her life. Under some pressure from fans, a pigeon-holed career for some of the stars, and of course the big payday that a big-time summer movie release would bring, fans everywhere finally have their wish to get one more glimpse into the story of the 4 New York City women of Sex and The City. A film works a little different than a tv show, and instead of 22 minutes, we are talking more than 2 hours for a new story to be played out.
When we last left the four stars of Sex and The City, it seemed that a lot of stories were finally getting some leg-work when it came to finally reaching closure. There were of course many questions left, like what would happen between Big and Carrie, whether Samantha was finding that true happiness with her new boyfriend, if Miranda would be happy with her re-kindled relationship with her childs father, and just how everything is going with Charlotte and her newly adopted baby. For those unfamiliar with the show and its premise, the center of the story surrounds four women in New York City, who had all been in their 30's and single when the show started, but went through many different ups and downs in relationships during the 7 year run of the show (6 seasons, but season 6 was split in two). The stars of the show were/are Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw, Kim Cattrall as Samantha Jones, Kristin Davis as Charlotte York, and Cynthia Nixon as Miranda Hobbes.
The film starts out exactly as it should, with a quick synopsis voiced by our narrator, Carrie Bradshaw (Parker). She goes through quick snippets for each of the girls, running through some big events for each that took place during the shows run. Each of the characters is re-introduced, and everything is brought forward for people who might be new to the franchise. She then gives a quick back-story of herself, and brings us up to speed on how the four of them have changed in the last four years. It's no mystery how the movie really gets underway, with a wedding soon to happen for "Big" (Christopher Noth) and Carrie, who have been dating (on and off) for the past 10 years. It has always seemed that he wasn't the type to settle down, but now he finally might. The central theme of the story soon involved the wedding plans, and everything surrounding them including the fashion, friends, and of course family of each of the four girls.
If you were to take a step back and look at the Sex and The City movie, you could almost describe it as an elongated episode. The film jumps between the four girls as they deal with their male relationships, and comes back to find them enjoying lunches and nights out on the New York City scene. It's tougher with Samantha living in L.A. now, but she makes the time for her girls when she needs to. If you were ever a fan of the television show, the movie is going to please just about every facet that you enjoyed. It is big on fashion, friends, and of course the evolution of the relationships for each of the main characters. There are moments of extreme humor, and a few nuggets thrown in there that will surely make die-hard fans of the show extremely happy. It also provided a few new one-liners that are sure to become infused in pop culture. For a guy, I there seemed to be some undertones and sub-text to some of the material that the predominantly female audience in my theater latched on to, and even I found myself drawn into what the characters were going through. Sure this isn't an Oscar picture, but one thing it definitely is, is a movie that finally does justice to its roots on television, and in some instances, may have actually surpassed it. I do recommend this film, and it will soon become a definite must-own for fans of Sex and The City.
