An availability trade-off

Pros:Very easy to use, especially if you have full-time internet connection
Cons:Causes an almost daily reboot requirement
The Bottom Line: Look for a virus product that does not cause reboots and is well supported

This is an easy to use program. It auto-updates, and appears to work fine. The scan function sometimes fails due apparently to problems at the mcafee.com website. The worst feature is that when it updates its database of viruses, it requires a reboot to implement the changes. I can't say the cure is worse than the disease, but I would look for an anti-virus program that doesn't add its own reasons for rebooting.

I have written to mcafee about this problem, but had zero response, so I am not impressed with customer support. This negative attitude to customer support is supported by the poor support I had for their companion product, Personal Firewall. It took four attempts emailing back and forth to get them to understand my question, and the immediate response was to blame Internet Explorer 6. (McAfee does not support IE6).

It is also not clear if the manual virus scan is a requirement or not.

PS. Since writing this review, I have deinstalled McAfee Personal Firewall since it was changed to no longer provide protection against trojans (programs resident on your computer which attempt to initiate outward communication with evil intent). Also, the poor support experiences have become worse. I will be looking for a new virus protection program.
