The Bottom Line Hello. Pollyanna here to give her two cents.
Hi Chad! What are your spiritual beliefs or religious affiliations? I grew up Catholic. Now, I'm just trying to figure out how all of the pieces fit together. Consider myself "spiritual", "believing in something", but I can't put a label on it yet. What is your sexual orientation? Hetero. How do you see your own religious/spiritual views as influencing your opinion of sexuality? I definitely think that my religious/spiritual views have close to nothing to do with my opinion of sexuality. I think that spirituality is a singular, personal thing that has nothing to do with anyone else - let alone, the sexuality of someone else. How do you define marriage? Let me just make this short and sweet. Marriage to me is a government term - a contract between two people - that creates entitlements and benefits. What thoughts or reactions do you have to these two pictures? 1. It's sweet although I question their taste in clothing. Well specifically, the old man looks like George Carlin with hawaiian beads. 2. Heartfelt. Here's an entire group of people who you can tell - have great love for each other. How awesome is that in this frickin messed up world? How does one of Christian faith reconcile these two pictures? Is one right and one wrong? What reactions do you have to seeing these signs? Hey - I support people speaking their mind and if they really think that - regardless of religious affiliation - good for them. My reaction? How hurtful of them to say such mean, spirited, non-Christian type things. Two wrongs shouldn't make it right in their book. Ditto #1. My reaction - I guess people feel the need to step up and use "words" against those who embrace the bible. Everyone can quote it in and out of context. My personal thought is that quoting from the bible waters down the argument that everyone should be treated equally. Why do you think the topic of homosexuality is so polarizing in religious communities? Such an easy question! :) Just like within any society, you have people who fall into the extreme right, extreme left, or middle. Religion, politics, intelligence, etc... It's all a bell curve... I also think that to accept homosexuality, the extreme right fears that it opens the door up for other things which will lead all human kind down a path of no-return-evil. Kind of like, those who smoke cigarettes will end up murdering people follow the trail - cigarettes morphs into marijuana which morphs into crack which morphs into killing and stealing and raping and pillaging. Should the government be in the business of defining marriage? Why or why not? According to my definition, yes. It's a legal and binding contract that gives entitlements/benefits/responsibilities to two individuals as one entity - like a business partnership. And if the government would define marriage appropriately and stay out of the religion business, we wouldn't be having these polarizing discussions today. After all, last time I checked, we didn't ask the government to be our spiritual leaders.... Would you support the legalization of gay marriage? I would support the legalization of a contract of two individuals - regardless of sex, race, etc.... If you answered yes, what are your fears behind it remaining illegal? I think my number concern is that those individuals who are truly operating in a marriage like way, will continue to be discriminated against from an entitlement/benefit perspective. Just look at the number of cases that go to court every year because of this crap. It's just an all-around waste of resources - an easy fix to this situation. Would you support government-sanctioned civil unions between homosexual couples? Everyone - i.e. - all couples should be unionized under the same term. None of this marriage for one and civil union for the other. That's just like the, "Don't ask, Don't tell" policy.... Do you see any way of bridging this current divide in our country over "wedge issues" like gay marriage or abortion? Or should we even be trying? I don't think you should ever give up, I do think however, a different tact should be taken. I wish things in life (and death) were all or nothing but unfortunately, our entire existence is made up of all grey. I'm just wondering when the extreme individuals will realize that... What do you see America's view of homosexuality and gay marriage being in 100 years from today? What will those future Americans think of us in 2005, as they look back? I think that by then, views will have matured within government and the marriage thing will be looked at as a "contract" like it should be (as opposed to that religious thing). I don't think that 2005 in particular, stands out as any significant year in the fight for/against the legalization of gay marriages. I think that the period of 2000-2015 will show a pattern that will be reflected back on in history. Final thoughts or ideas: I hate to be the pollyanna of this write-off however, I must say that it saddens me that so much negative energy has to be poured into something that shouldn't make one lick of difference. Leave the religious twist out of government and what you have is a non-issue. If we diverted the energy to things where we could really impact the "real wrongs" of the world - just think what could be accomplished.... |
