Bob and Edith's Diner - It's Worth the Trip!Apr 22 '05 (Updated Apr 24 '05) Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line For a great meal at a great piece with laid back diner ambiance to boot, Bob and Edith's is a great choice 24 hours a day. While one would think a highly cosmopolitan area such as the DC metro area would have plenty of very late night and 24 hour locations for dining. However, this is sadly not the case. The majority of DC dining comes to a halt by midnight, and the rest tapering off by 1 or 2 am. I came across the Epinions reviews for late night eateries, in the hope that in the future there would be an option for late night eaters like myself and my wife. After reading the excellent reviews for Bob and Edith's, we ventured out from northwest DC to find this enigmatic diner. Our first time trying to find it was quite difficult (especially being 1st year residents here in the city). Sadly, they are not Metro accessible (to the best of my knowledge). However, for anyone with a decent road knowledge of the area should have little trouble finding it. It isn't more than 15 minutes outside of downtown, and it is worth the drive at any hour of the day or night! Ambience Bob and Edith's is an old style diner, just as the name suggests. Don't expect the Palm; you're walking into what looks like a trailer from the outside. While the inside seems like something out of a 50s movie, the restaurant is clean and not too claustrophobic. However, keep in mind, this is the state of Virginia, and thus smoking is still allowed in these indoor establishments. Given the small size of the restaurant, if there are smokers in the area, you'll probably be smelling it (and by the end of the meal, smelling like it). Food Here's where Bob and Edith's takes my prize for the best late night food. Sure, you could stop in at a 24-hour McDonalds, but you're getting the same garbage as you would during the day at that establishment. However, at Bob and Edith's, there is comprehensive menu of diner delights that are sure to please. Keep in mind, these aren't exactly your healthy diet items; chances are, you're getting twice your dose of cholesterol in one order. Nevertheless, the quality of the food is excellent, and the dishes will bring a smile to your face and to your stomach. Breakfast is available all day, and I'd always recommend the corned beef hash! Also good are the pancakes, eggs, bacon, and toast. The choices range from sandwiches with all the usual deli meats, to home-style meals such as biscuits and gravy, salisbury steak. There are the "can't go wrong" options like chicken fingers or hamburgers, and there are three or four juice types along with the usual soft drink selection. Desserts are fantastic, they have their own incredible selection of homemade pies (apple, cherry, pumpkin, etc, all available a la mode) and therefore B & E's is a fun dessert spot to take friends after a late show. Price/Recap Don't expect Bob and Edith's to break the bank. Most entrees are less than $10, and they will be sure to fill you up. Dress is very casual, though they wouldn't turn you away even if you were dressed up after a Kennedy Center show. The diner has received a fair share of awards, including a fantastic Zagat rating year after year. You won't be disappointed by Bob and Edith's for any meal, any time of the day. |
